This was the concept for my protagonist, I had drawn it with the focus on modelling in in 3D, hence the simplicity, but also the focus on shaping that will allow me to incorporate details effectively.
The Protagonist is the only model I will need as it will be the only fully rigged model
My design philosophy is inherently affected by my project's lighting, therefore many details on the model will be omitted by the silhouette effect. This means my model will need distinct features that will help the character stand out against the background. Due to this, I had added the chain of a pocket watch, and emphasised the coat's collar to protrude.
This design was rooted in my research around silhouette visual styles, as I wanted to work and ensure this character had a distinct silhouette that is recognisable against the background elements, hence the protrusion of the collar, and the addition of the pocket watch to give it a more unique element.
To ensure my direct character design choices were justly informed, I carried out some smaller aspects of research, namely around referencing for coats and typical attire that follows a generic middle class worker. Upon searching for sources, I located a blog on mens fashion (Bowser, J. 2024), that effectively provided me with direct insight on the use cases of trench coats in regards to men's fashion, as well as what it can be paired with. Now due to the intentions I have for a silhouette style, I was aware that details will be obscured, and as such, it isn't as important as to what outfit is worn underneath the coat, however, pre-determining what the character will wear will allow me to better design the silhouette. This blog directly dictates the ease of pairing a trench coat, and that depsite how versatile it is, there are still some pairings that are the most optimal, the most relevant one to me being the three-piece suit. It is logical that my character would wear attire such as this as they are to be designed for a workplace setting. This allowed me to design the extra collar that would exist in place of a shirt collar, which would typically be worn with a suit, and then designing the trousers to be simple dress slacks, in terms of fit.
The storyboard for my animation is self-explanatory, it covers the general scenes and also gives me an indicator of what i will need or my animation in regards to props/assets.
The story will be short and silent, with a heavy focus on sound effects like rain and footsteps, really ensuring that the silence is stiffling, as a world without art would be devoid of music.
As per what I learnt with sound design in my research, having the lacking soundscape allows me to cultivate the audience's emotions, therefore creating a sense of desolation and lonliness in the main character. Audiences will be able to feel what the character feels, which
My environmental concept art is simple and mainly just outlines the general blueprint of the layout, as well as some of the architectural principles that I can apply to the buildings/environment.
Using Piccadilly Circus as a frame, I intend to utilise dreary brick buildings with a lot of the architecture removed, as currently the area hosts magnificent and ornate architecture, that in this hypothetical world would be removed and forsaken.
There is also a rudimentary top down blueprint, which will be vital to the modelling process.
As per my research, my environment has focuses on Generative AI billboards making sure they are prominently placed as to be visible frequently. As I had learned that most of my audience has a distate towards it's uses, so making these billboards evident in a lot of scenes, with billboards that build the world and explain the story, and will ensure the theme is clear
My environment is evidently guided largelyby existing places within London, this allowed for a degree of authenticity to my work, as well as a feeling of place in the world. As such however, I needed to ensure I research the area I want to mimic, which is Piccadilly Circus in central London. This area was mentioned by my tutor, who stated that the large advertisement building that the area is so well known for, coyuld work as an effective story telling device, with entirely AI Generated advertisements in place of typical ones. To find imagery that would be useful for referencing, I resorted to the Brittanica Website, as that would have tourist images for the area. Using there for inspiration, I drew up various parts that stood out to me, and additionally stripped down the ornate aspects of surrounding architecture, to truly emphasise the dreariness this world has been subject to. With this, I managed to effectively inform my creative decisions in regards to my concept art here.
My mood board covers the general focus of a monochromatic art style, utilising some small choices of colour to emphasise how I want the picture to look in relation to the rest of the animation by using images like scenes from Typoman, a typically dreary and dull game, that uses colour to portray importance. I also included depth buffers, which I had learnt about in my experimentation too. With all of this compiled, I was able to ensure that I captured the exact aesthetic and feel I wanted for my animation
