Ultimately, though, a TV finale should stay with you, long after you turn off your set. For me, The Americans ender hit that mark brilliantly. More than a week later, I can't get it out of my head.
Hoping that both sides of a battle succeed made me realize early on that The Americans finale wouldn't give us a happy ending, nor could it just cleanly kill the Jennings off. So, I wasn't surprised that, when Stan finally figured out that his neighbors and best friends were spies, they were able to escape anyway. As almost every review of the finale has said, the 11-minute standoff between Stan and the Jennings in the parking garage was spine-tinglingly amazing. But even so, it's two shorter scenes later in the episode that haven't stopped pulsing through my brain.

Going into Sunday's finale, it felt irreconcilable that fans could spend so much time watching eight seasons of Game of Thrones and still lack enough time to understand why characters are ending up where they are.

As Joy and Nolan promised, the finale answered some of the questions that have had us scratching our heads for the past few weeks. We've had a peep inside the Forge and wandered around in James Delos' simulated mind. And we learned that the library really does contain the data of everyone who's ever visited the theme park. (Because the hats were scanning people's brains all along, remember? Surely the silliest revelation of the entire series.)
The season finale is all about endings, but let's not forget the beginning: a retro-styled prologue that imagines what this show would be like if made in the 1970s, in the style of legendary series The Incredible Hulk (which ran from 1978 to 1982, plus a few TV movies). This is more than a cute homage to the classic show: She-Hulk was actually created because of the show, as Marvel comics staffers hurriedly created a woman version of the angry green giant so they'd grab the character rights before the TV show creators could think of it.
One of my biggest complaints about the series is that Jen's fourth wall-breaking chats to the audience are supposed to be funny when Jen criticizes the show's obvious problems, but that doesn't stop these issues still being problems. At last though the meta commentary pays off hugely in the finale.
Jen confronts the show's writers about the messy finale and familiar final confrontation. While fans might want to see a long-awaited Hulk/Abomination rematch, Jen wants to deal with the real human emotional stakes she's grappling with. That, the writers respond, isn't the show Kevin wants. They must be talking about Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the baseball-hatted supremo who's steered the MCU to box office dominance. Except, as the subtitles reveal, they're actually talking about someone -- or something -- called K.E.V.I.N.
House of the Dragon has been renewed for a second season, though we don't yet know when that'll hit. Hopefully the wait isn't long, as the finale will get you aching for the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. For the final time this year: House of the Dragon spoilers below.
