"Mentor texts were used as the basis of discussion and to spark students’ creativity and provided a sample to spark students' understanding of filmmaking products and processes" FSGS team
Mentor text were specific films created by the FSGS team that were used as a model or example to teach and inspire. Students analyzed the film called The Patito Drama and how "the director" used camera angles, storytelling techniques, editing styles, or other cinematic elements. By studying and discussing mentor films, these 5th-grade filmmakers gained insights into the craft, learned effective storytelling methods, and developed a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of filmmaking. Mentor texts served as valuable references to help Film School for Global Scientist filmmakers refine their skills and express their creativity in a Second Language.
To plan their films, learners were provided with a storyboard handout to think about how to convey the message of the film. It also included space for drawings and text. They explored the relationship between visuals, narration, and other elements of filmmaking
