Places along the [Ridge]Way

The Greensand Landscape Partnership’s map shows the route of the 35 mile path along the ridge and some of the features to see along the way.

The next images follow the way from south west to north east.

Leighton Buzzard market, 20 March 2021

Kathryn Faulkner Z1749/8

To allow extra space for social distancing during the pandemic Leighton Buzzard High Street was closed to traffic, allowing the 1000 year old market to continue to operate. Stalls selling samosas illustrate changes in food tastes.

Hockliffe Street, Leighton Buzzard, 13 September 2020

Kathryn Faulkner Z1749/8

The use of these 16th century properties has changed and adapted over nearly half a millennium. One is now being used as a Teenage Advice and Information Centre.

Little Brickhill, taken from the church showing Watling Street heading North West. 6 March 2021

Vaughan Dean, Z1749/7/2/3

The once major road is now peaceful as traffic is taken by the M1 and the bypass constructed in 1992. Milton Keynes can be seen on the horizon.

Aspley Guise, The Square facing east, 6 March 2021

Vaughan Dean, Z1749/7/4

The Pitchings, Woburn, view taken from the corner of Park Street looking north west, 3 March 2020,

Greg Harrison, Z1749/2/1/1

School House, Eversholt, 3 March 2020

Greg Harrison, Z1749/2/3/2-3

Used as the residence for the head teacher at Eversholt School from the mid-19th century; a blue plaque celebrates the two sons of one of the headmasters who became polar explorers. This form of commemoration has become increasingly popular in recent times but outside London is not coordinated in any way and therefore records of where plaques have been put are hard to find.

Segenhoe Close, Ridgmont, 6 March 2020

Linda Swain, Z1749/4/1/14

Small housing estates are rarely recorded by photographers and yet many of us live in them and watch a steady stream of changes such as vehicle use, communications and fashions in gardens.

Ampthill Christmas lights, view looking north up Bedford Street, 25 December 2019

Martin Nellist, Z1749/5/2/18

One of the rare occasions when this view can be taken without traffic. Martin also submitted a view of this road without traffic taken at the beginning of the first Covid-19 lockdown. It is important to know the context of when images were taken if we are to understand what they may be telling us.

Clophill lock up and bus shelter, 21 May 2020

Chas Leslie, Z1749/1/5/1

The old village lock-up and pound have been preserved. Note how the lock-up is balanced by the design of the bus shelter on the other side of the pound

The Porch, Northbridge Street, Shefford, 17 January 2021

Nicky King, Z1749/6/1/12

Formerly Barclays Bank, now vacant. Head on view of the property, showing the herringbone nogging (brick infill) within the timber framing. The Barclays Bank sign is still in place on the property, along with the Nightsafe. It points at the slow decline in local bank branches. In tracing the history of a property a dated photograph showing when a property ceased to be used for a particular purpose can be invaluable.

Front entrance to Shuttleworth Collection, Old Warden Airfield, from Hill Lane, Old Warden. 10 March 2020

Nicky King, Z1749/6/2/11

The restoration and development of the collection and garden as a tourist attraction has gone through many phases and it is important to maintain a record. A new main entrance to the site, accessible from the B658, is to be opened in 2021.

Moggerhanger Park House with wedding car at the door, 14 October 2017

Ian Whiting, Z1749/3/3/1

The renovation of the Soane house, previously used as a sanatorium, turned this important building and landscape into an attractive wedding and conference venue and a tourist attraction.

Sandy The "Band stand" at the Western corner of the Market Square (looking South West) with a view along the High Street to the right during the last days of the 3rd Covid Lockdown, 23 March 2021.
