Read back through all of your journal entries in one setting, and then write a meta-entry based on any observations you made when looking back at your reflections “in toto.” When you look across the “arc” of your semester, what did you notice? What themes can you draw out? What are your key take-aways? File that to the Level One Assignment Dropbox on TWEN by 8:00 a.m. the morning of Classroom Component B. For Summer 2 (applied to Spring), the due date is Friday, Apr. 17 at 8:00 a.m.
File courtesy copies of your two specialty journal entries to the Level One Assignment Dropbox on TWEN by 8:00 a.m. the day before Classroom Component B. Thus, for Summer 2 (applied to Spring), the due date is Thursday, Apr. 16 at 8:00 a.m.:
The journal entry you wrote connecting your field work to the article, "Cultural Competency and the Practice of Law in the 21st Century" by Aastha Madaan (ABA J. Mar. 1, 2017)
The journal entry you wrote connecting your experience in the field to the article, "The Pedagogy of Trauma-Informed Lawyering," by Sarah Katz & Deeya Haldar, 22 Clinical L. Rev. 359 (2016)
File copies of your four specialty journal entries to the Level Two Assignment Dropbox on TWEN by 8:00 a.m. the day before Classroom Component B. Thus, for Summer 2 (applied to Spring), the due date is Thursday, Apr. 16 at 8:00 a.m.:
Write a journal entry connecting your field work to some aspect of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s professional identity, career, philosophies, etc.
Write a journal entry connecting your field work to any other aspect of the assigned excerpts from My Own Words.
Write a journal entry connecting your work and professional identity to the resources available in one of the membership organizations you joined (or researched) in Classroom Component A (bar association and/or trade association).
After your one-on-one informational interview with your Site Supervisor (your "Guru interview"), conducted during the back-half of the externship, reflect on what you learned from that interaction. What factors played into your Site Supervisor’s professional identity formation? What aspects of your Site Supervisor’s career, character, practice, etc. do you hope to incorporate into your own professional identity?
Type up an “interview story” that you might tell a potential employer in a future interview when the interviewer sees this second experiential learning placement on your resume and asks, “So, tell me about your time at X.” (You should recognize this assignment, as we did something similar in-class during Classroom Component B for your first, credited placement). Remember to use the classic story structure, including yourself as hero, the “quest/task” that was set before you, the dragons you faced, and the crown you ultimately achieved/won.
NOTE: You do not need to file this entry on TWEN ahead of time. Please just bring a digital copy with you to class, as we will engage in an in-class activity where we mark it up. You will then file the marked-up copy to TWEN during class, after our in-class assignment.
Prepare at least one question for group discussion based on the assigned excerpts from My Own Words, by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with Mary Hartnett and Wendy W. Williams (2016), and be prepared to moderate group discussion on that question. You should enter the question/topic you are prepared to moderate in the Google Doc linked here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KJ60x-cFNnNMG_bS9AJL6mpgpa5-HqtMMC6yzOF3QxM/edit?usp=sharing.
NOTE: For a reminder on the assigned excerpts, please reference the table in the Level Two Onboarding Email.
File copies of your specialty journal entries to the Level Three Assignment Dropbox on TWEN by 8:00 a.m. on the morning of Classroom Component B. Thus, for Summer 2 (applied to Spring), the due date is Friday, Apr. 17 at 8:00 a.m.:
Connect your field work to the law review article you selected to situate your work experience relative to larger conversations in legal scholarship.
Connect your field work to a news story to situate your work experience relative to current events.
Tell your Site Supervisor what you are considering presenting on during Classroom Component B. Discuss any ways your conversation deepened your understanding of the topic or otherwise influenced your preparation.
File your presentations (if using PPT) to the appropriate Level Three Assignment Dropbox on TWEN by 8:00 a.m. on the day before Classroom Component B. Thus, for Summer 2 (applied to Spring), the due date is Thursday, Apr. 16 at 8:00 a.m. Presentation reminders include:
5-minute presentation w/ visual aids (PPT, demonstrative exhibits, etc.)
Don’t read from notes.
Include an introduction to you and the placement site.
Teach your audience (peers) about a legal concept arising from your work in your placement (this should not require additional research):
Ex. a substantive lesson on a statute, a landmark decision, or niche policy work, etc.
Ex. a how-to on a practical legal skill like preparing for a deposition, using an e-discovery platform, etc.
Explain how/why that statute, skill, etc. impacted your work in the field, but avoid divulging confidential information!
Be prepared to field questions from me and your peers.
