# Fido Account Deletion Policy

## How to Request Account Deletion
Account deletion is available in-app to any signed-in user, including a user whose Free trial has
expired and is otherwise locked out of the app's features.
1. Open the **Fido** app on your Android device and sign in if needed.
2. Tap the **gear/Settings icon** at the top of the **Home** screen.
- If your trial has expired, you'll see a locked-access screen instead of Home — it has its own
**"Delete account"** button, so you don't need to reach Settings first.
3. Scroll to the **"Delete account and all data"** row (shown in red) and tap it.
4. Confirm in the dialog that appears.
- If you have a paid plan, first use **Manage subscription** to cancel it in Google Play.
Deleting Fido does not cancel a Google Play subscription or stop its billing.
5. Re-authenticate with your Google account when prompted — we require a recent sign-in
before allowing account deletion, as a safety check.
6. Fido sends a request to our servers that permanently deletes your account. The app then clears
the data stored on your device and returns you to the sign-in screen.
> **Note:** Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. Once confirmed, there is no
> recovery window.
You can also request deletion by emailing us (see **Questions or Need Help?** below) if you no
longer have access to the app.

## What Data Is Deleted
Confirming deletion starts a permanent process on our servers: we first record that your account
is being deleted, so nothing can recreate it afterward, then delete everything stored under your
account, and finally delete your Google sign-in account itself. The deleted data includes:
- **Pet Profiles** — name, species/breed, gender, age, notes, and profile photo reference
- **Sessions** — recording metadata, status, and the local video reference
- **Mood Analysis** — analysis results, mood scores, observations, advice, and cached raw AI output
- **Journal Entries** — ABC-format entries, quick notes, and observation entries
- **Activities & Life Events** — logged activities and household life events
- **Behavior Reports** — all generated longitudinal reports
- **Trial & Subscription records** — trial start/expiry and subscription tier documents
- **Usage counters** — your monthly analysis, report, chat, and voice-journal usage counts, plus
the combined monthly usage total based on them
- **Your sign-in account itself** — sign-in identity, email, and name
Feedback you sent through **Settings → Help → Send feedback** is stored separately from your
account, so it is handled a bit differently: deletion removes your account ID and email address
from every submission you made but keeps the message text. What remains is no longer linked to you
or to any account, and the counter we use to limit how often you can submit feedback is deleted
outright. See "What Data Is Retained" below.
The app then clears the data stored on your device and signs you out, so it returns to a
signed-out state. If you were also signed in on another device, that device cannot bring the
deleted data back — our servers reject any attempt to recreate it. The next time you open the app
on that other device, Fido checks in with our servers; once it's confirmed your account no longer
exists, that device signs out and clears its own local data too. A temporary loss of internet
connection does not trigger this local cleanup on its own.
**Pet Chat conversations are not stored on our servers to begin with** — chat messages exist only
for the current chat session and are already gone once you leave the screen, independent of
account deletion.

## What Data Is Retained
| Data | Retained? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| All the data stored under your account | **No** — deleted immediately | It's deleted as one immediate step of the deletion request |
| Your sign-in account | **No** — deleted immediately | Deleted in the same request |
| Product feedback you submitted, with your account ID and email removed | **The message text only** | Feedback is stored separately because it's a report about the app, not data about your pet. Deletion removes the identifying fields; the remaining text is anonymous and is kept so a reported problem doesn't disappear along with the report |
| A record that your account was deleted | **Yes** | We keep your former account ID and the deletion date in a private, internal record so nothing — an old cached session, a delayed background process — can accidentally recreate your deleted data later |
| Payment/card details | **Never held by us in the first place** | Google Play Billing processes payments; Fido receives a purchase token, product ID, subscription state, and expiry, but never card or bank details |
| Video exported to your device's **Movies/Fido** folder | **Yes, on your device only** | This is a local file created by the optional "Save Video to Device" feature; it is not part of your account data and account deletion does not reach your device's gallery |
| Recording clips the app temporarily cached to process a recording | **Only until the app's normal 7-day cleanup, or until you clear app storage** | These are short-lived local files; deleting your account does not separately clear this local cache |
| Diagnostic data from our own code (crash reports, analytics) | **We don't collect any** | Fido has no crash-reporting or analytics tools built in |
We don't keep a separate backup of your account data. The cloud infrastructure we use may briefly
retain deleted data in its own operational backups, following its own standard deletion
schedule.

## Important Notes
### Data Stored on Your Device
Beyond the Movies/Fido export and the recording cache described above, Fido keeps a local copy of
your pets, sessions, journal, and reports on your device so the app works offline. Account
deletion clears this local copy automatically. If you instead uninstall the app without
deleting your account first, this local data is removed by Android when the app is uninstalled;
you can also clear it earlier via:
1. Android **Settings** → **Apps**
2. Find **Fido**
3. Tap **Storage** → **Clear Storage** (or **Clear Cache** / **Clear Data** separately)
Note that clearing local storage does **not** delete your cloud account — your account data
still exists on our servers until you complete the in-app deletion flow (or email us) as
described above.
### Video Files Exported to Your Gallery
If you used the "Save Video to Device" feature or enabled auto-save, those clips are copied to
your device's **Movies/Fido** folder, visible in your regular gallery app. They are **not** deleted
by account deletion and must be removed manually from your gallery app if you want them gone.
### Google Play Subscription
Deleting your Fido account does not cancel a Google Play subscription. Cancel it first from the
app's **Manage subscription** link or from Google Play's subscription center. Cancellation
normally takes effect at the end of the current paid period, subject to Google Play's policies and
applicable law.
### Third-Party Processing
Recording analysis, voice-journal transcription, Pet Chat, and Behavior Reports send relevant text
and/or media to third-party AI providers in order to generate their responses. See
`docs/terms-privacy.md` for the full disclosure. Account deletion removes this data from our own
systems; it does not reach into a third-party provider's own retention of requests they already
processed under their own policies.
