Hello and thanks for seeking additional information about the VMFA's Art Storage Warehouse. The neighbors on the block are hoping to share what we have learned about this plan, the key players, and the decisions that took place leading up to this project displacing green space in a residential area during a declared housing crisis by the City of Richmond.
The residents on the 2900 Floyd Grove Sheppard block consist of:
7 Owner Occupied Single-Family or Duplex Properties
4 of these created Floyd Grove Sheppard LLC
The remaining 3 volunteer at the VMFA and want to remain neutral
6 Landlord Operated Multi-Family or Duplex Properties
The VMFA Studio School, Parking, and Green Space
The State VMFA leases this operation from the VMFA Foundation.
A Single Family Home for use by a VMFA Foundation Director
The State VMFA does not have any lease for this activity.
More VMFA Parking on N. Colonial
The Museum District Association does not get involved in legal disputes or "take sides". Instead, the MDA will participate in legal planning activities that require neighborhood association participation or feedback.
The residents on the 2900 Block created a smaller neighborhood association to represent the interests of the block in opposition of the planned VMFA Art Warehouse because it did not make use of any zoning process that required notifying the community, involving the Museum District Association, or seeking neighbor feedback for basic concerns.
The residents here were only aware of the plans when construction fencing appeared suddenly - prompting immediate inquiry.
We are just ordinary neighbors—residents of the Museum District—standing up for our neighborhood interests. We have challenged a well-funded institution: the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation, backed by many donors and their legal partners.
