The connectivity of Green Areas in Quito

Quito, the capital of Ecuador is a city full of history. The geography of the mountainous valley where this city lays makes for unique landscapes and scenery. However, historically Quito have neglected its green pasts. Originally the terrain where the city is was full of ravines, small forests and plenty of life. Now that the city is becoming a metropoli, is becoming ever more evident the lack of green spaces within main urban areas. (Could you spot the closest park in the picture at the right?). Parks and green areas have been placed without almost any planning at all. Quito, being in a biodiverse country have a high diversity as well! Improving the network of green spaces will bring back (at least in part) the lost biodiversity of Quito!

How green is Quito?

Well that is the first question to ask. The image at your right shows exactly that. We can see that most of the green is at the perifery of the city (where there is less development). However, the urban area of the city almost lack of any green areas. In fact, we can conclude that few green areas inside the urban area are actually within walking distance of each other.

If we can not walk within parks, how do you expect that fauna can cross? Perhaps some birds can fly but what about the rest? Furthermore this becomes a problem also for Quito's citizens! How do you walk your dog? Where do you find shadow in a sunny day at the Equator!? This are all pressing issues that NEEDS to be tackle!
