Main Advantages
Key Considerations
Mash
Layer chickens in battery cages
• Lower cost• Birds can eat slowly• Works well with long trough feeders
• Birds can select ingredients• Requires constant feed access• Less efficient in free-range systems
Pellets
Broilers & free-range layers
• Balanced diet in every bite• Less feed wastage• Better growth & feed efficiency
• Requires correct feeder space• Not ideal for very young birds
Crumble
Young chicks & growers
• Smaller particle size• Balanced nutrition• Reduced wastage
• Same price as pellets• Best used only until birds are larger
Animal feed freshness is a major concern for many farmers. We all want to provide our livestock and pets with the best possible nutrition. One of the most important factors affecting feed quality is shelf life.
Shelf life refers to the length of time a feed maintains its intended nutritional value and physical characteristics from the date it is produced by the manufacturer. Shelf life can vary significantly depending on the type of feed and, most importantly, how it is stored.
The single biggest factor affecting feed shelf life is storage.
When feed is stored in cool, dry conditions, nutrient levels can remain stable for up to four months from the date of manufacture, including storage at the supplier and on the farm. However, exposure to heat and humidity can drastically reduce shelf life — sometimes to just a few weeks.
Another major challenge in feed storage is mould contamination. Mould spores are naturally present in the environment, but they multiply rapidly in warm and moist conditions. This is why feed should always be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, off the ground and away from direct sunlight.
Given Seychelles’ hot and humid climate, it is recommended that farmers:
Purchase smaller quantities of feed more frequently
Use feed within 30–45 days from the date of manufacture, when nutritional value is at its peak
Always inspect feed before use for:
Mould
Discolouration
Unusual odours
Excess dust (which may indicate quality decline in pelleted feed)
Ferox Feed livestock feed is produced locally in Seychelles on a weekly basis, allowing us to supply farmers with fresh feed year-round.
Professional farmers also have the option to pre-order feed according to their rearing schedule, ensuring animals receive feed at its highest nutritional value.

Do Ferox Feed products contain growth hormones?
No. Absolutely not.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified synthetic steroid hormones as environmental contaminants that can harm reproduction and development in humans and wildlife. For this reason, Ferox Feed does not include growth hormones in any feed we produce.
As a 100% local business, we are committed to responsible, sustainable farming practices that protect Seychelles’ environment and support future generations.
Modern poultry grow faster without hormones due to:
Improved genetics from selective breeding
Precisely formulated nutrition
Better farm environments (temperature, ventilation, lighting)
With the right genetics, feed, and management, chickens grow efficiently and naturally — no growth hormones are needed.
Ross 308 is a globally recognised broiler breed known for reliability, good feed efficiency, and strong performance. Broilers typically reach slaughter weight between 4–7 weeks and have white feathers with yellow skin.
Key features:
Fast growth rate
Good feed conversion efficiency
Early muscle development
Bright skin and good appearance
Can reach up to 2 kg at 6 weeks
Available as slow- or fast-feathering
Compared to Cobb 500:
Smaller final body weight
Lower feed intake
Better feed conversion ratio
Higher survival rate
Requires more management attention
Cobb 500 originates from the USA and is one of the most widely used broiler breeds worldwide. It is valued for rapid growth, size, and cost-efficient meat production, making it ideal for whole birds and cut-up processing.
Key features:
Excellent growth rate
Produces larger birds
Consistent appearance and meat quality
Lowest cost per kg of live weight
Requires less management input
Compared to Ross 308:
Higher final body weight
Faster growth and weight gain
Higher feed consumption
Slightly lower feed efficiency
Lower survival rate
Ross 308 → Better feed efficiency, higher viability, needs closer management
Cobb 500 → Faster growth, larger birds, easier to manage
