What is Winter Guard?

Winter guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles and other equipment as well as dance and other interpretive movements. It is very similar to the marching band color guard, but with a few key differences. Performances happen indoors with equipment and props on a tarp to recorded music. Winter guards can be found across the country in high schools, middle schools and at the collegiate level, as well as operate independently from any school affiliation.

The winter guard season starts with auditions in November after fall color guard and runs through State Championships in late March. We compete in the state circuit, the Michigan Color Guard Circuit (MCGC) and the national circuit, Winter Guard International (WGI).

Any Ferndale student, who is in grades 7-12 can audition.  NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY!  Students with prior color guard, dance, gymnastics, baton, martial arts or other performance training find enjoyment in participating this activity.

Rehearsals are primarily Monday and Wednesday 6-9pm, there are some Friday and Saturday rehearsals. Competitions are Saturdays and Sundays in February and March. Full schedule available in our Parent Hub.

During the audition days, you will spend time getting to know other prospective guard members and current high school guard members. We will start with a dance class where you will learn basic stretches and across-the-floor exercises. After dance, we will transition into learning flag basics.

What to wear: Athletic clothing such as a tank top, leggings, T-shirt, or shorts, along with tennis shoes. Please have your hair secured and out of your face, and bring a water bottle.

Equipment: All equipment needed for auditions will be provided. If you have previously participated in color guard and have your own equipment, you are welcome to bring it.
