I knew teaching was something I wanted to do from a young age. I enjoyed life as a student and loved working with children. I loved being able to visit my mom in her classroom and help with anything and everything. I graduated from the University of Montana where I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. I continued my education through Walden University with a Masters of Science in Education for Mathematics. Math is my passion and I want my students to be confident in their math potential and recognize the importance and application it has throughout life outside of the classroom.
I started my teaching career with 4th grade for four years and a combination class of 4th and 5th graders for one year at Eagle Cliffs Elementary. Ironically it is also where I attended grade school. I grew up in Billings and I am a product of Billings Public Schools. My middle school journey started at Medicine Crow Middle School (MCMS) in the fall of 2017. I taught 7th grade for one year, but have taught 6th grade math since then. Along with teaching, I am a co-leader to the Student Council. I assist students in creating leadership skills, service projects, and plan school spirit activities. I have been a member of our district’s union with the Billings Education Association since my first year and became a building representative two years ago. This opportunity has helped me understand more about our teachers union and the educational system I’m passionate about.
My school and surrounding community is suburban. Medicine Crow consists of about 700 students, of which are grades 6 through 8. Of these 700 students, 73% are Caucasian and 27% are American Indian, Hispanic, Black, or two or more races. Of the student body, 36% are eligible for free lunch, while 6% are considered reduced lunch. The socioeconomic status of my students varies. There is a 17:1 ratio of students to teachers on average. Medicine Crow has several English Language Learners. MCMS currently has 93 students with an IEP and 15 students with 504’s.
