Parts of my plan I was able to implement:
I was able to implement sending out the survey to my staff regarding the importance and need of teacher mentorship (Evidence #14). The majority agreed mentoring is important and most would be willing to take a mentor role. I was also able to look over feedback from the set of questions I sent out via email (Evidence #15). The feedback was helpful as I learned about many experiences and perspectives about how important and supportive mentoring can be. I will implement my staff project at the beginning of the 2021/2022 school year. I will continue to collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and instructional coaches in regards to what mentorship will look like within our building.
How successful was my action plan at addressing the challenge?
The feedback from my staff, and other teachers within my district, confirms the need for teacher mentorship. This has given me a starting point to work from as a new school year approaches. I will measure the success of my challenge once the school 2021/2022 year starts. I will send out another survey to staff in hopes there are suggestions and feedback.
Which stakeholders and association practice or program were impacted?
Those impacted consisted of teachers, administration, and colleagues within my building and within my district.
How do you know?
I received survey results and emails from the stakeholders. I had conversations with stakeholders about possible ideas to make this program come to life in our district.
How were your four chosen competencies used in the implementation of your project?
The competencies I chose were well implemented within this project. Personal Effectiveness and Interpersonal Effectiveness challenged me to grow as a teacher leader and identify challenges and how I can help be a part of solving them. My Instructional Competency of Coaching and Mentoring has shown me how much I value professional development, especially when it benefits students. This Leadership Competency has also provided me with new ideas about education to engage with colleagues. The Foundational Competency of Explore and Challenge Inequity has brought awareness of the cultures within my classroom and the inequities that exist based on these different groups. Each of these helped guide my project and the vision I have for it (Evidence #16).
What obstacles, if any, did you encounter?
The biggest obstacle with a mentorship program is the funding. I became aware of this when I met with a former TLI participant and the work she had done during her experience, also regarding teacher mentorship. For the initial project in my school, the biggest obstacle will be teachers who do not see a need for mentoring, do not want to be a mentor, or do not fill out the slide.
How did you address them?
I have not addressed the issue of funding or looked at possible solutions for funding at a district level. For those who have expressed interest in mentoring within my building, I will meet with them and work together to discuss ideas and next steps to take.
Given the outcomes, describe any changes you might make to the Capstone Project action plan.
I will make changes within my building as the 2021/2022 school year starts, and after I see how the informational slides go.
