Science Leadership Workshop

Legacy

This page contains information on the Science Academies'-Science Leadership Workshop (SLW) that was held between June 22 to June 28, 2020. The SLW had been India's first science leadership program, and the largest science event in the world (total number of registrants: 20,205).

The workshop paved the way for two key extensions (click the link for more details and application)

  1. Virtual Internship with Science Leaders (VISL)

  2. Young Science Leader (#YSL) series

Certificates and Validation

Certificates

An informal participation certificate is available for all registered delegates who secured 40% or above scores in exit examination. The certificate is available here: Download Certificate

We follow academic honor code for this certificate. The certificate is blank, you would need to write your name in it if you are sure that you have passed the exit exam and your name appear in the list of delegates. To write your name, there are three options:

  • Take a print and write name using pen

  • Edit image in paint, type your name and take a print.

  • Paste image in PowerPoint, add name as a text-box, export as pdf file

Validation of certificates

Please note that validation process is not for participants, but people who inspect your certificate at a later stage. To validate one must go to https://bit.ly/SLW-Delegate

There are two sheets in the validation workbook. For the certificate to be valid name should appear in both of these sheets (Registered Delegates and Exit Exam Scores), and the candidate should have scored 40% or above in the examination.

Frequently Asked Questions

I went to validation site and found my name, how to generate certificate?

There is no need to generate certificate, it is already available on the top of this page. Just download and add your name. Validation is not for you, but people who inspect your certificate at a later stage (for example, your employer/ university admission section etc).

Certificate has no logos/signatures. Is this authentic?

Yes. Certificate is foolproof as it can be validated digitally. We believe digital certificates like this is the future. Even Income Tax Returns or GRE scores have no signatures, but can be digitally validated.

Another webinar I attended offered me certificate with logos and signatures, this is blank. Logos make it authentic!

That is a common misconception. Anyone can Photoshop logos and even signatures. Digital validation feature of this certificate is foolproof, and through which we support 'digital India' initiative of the union government.

Anyone can misuse this certificate by writing their names who didn't attend the workshop

Of course they can write, as in any other certificate with printed name (photoshopping any certificate is very easy no matter it has name or not) but illegitimate use of this certificate can easily be caught as fake by those who examine the certificates. As name should be in the registered delegates.

I passed in exit exam but unfortunately my name is missing in list of delegates. What can I do?

If your name isn't in 20,205 names of original registrants, we can't do anything, as that list is frozen, and the file is closed. Issue is that many people simply attend the exit exam and pass without actually registering for the workshop.

What is academic honor code?

This certificate itself is a lesson that we as a science leader should be ethical. By typing in or writing your name in the certificate you declare that you are eligible to be awarded the participation certificate because you genuinely registered for the workshop and passed the exit exam. You are signing an academic honor code.

What is the connection with Ryou Shin Ichi (正心市)?

Having lived in Japan for five years, Ryou Shin Ichi (Literal translation from Japanese Kanji characters: "market for people with a good heart) influenced me a lot. These are famed honesty shops in Japanese villages, there are thousands of such unmanned shops scattered throughout rural Japan. Shops have no CCTV, no robotic machinery; farmers simply put their produce in the box and mark suggested price. . Customers take the produce, put money in the open money box, get change and go. Unattended, unsupervised.

Such systems based on mutual trust happen elsewhere too. For example, in Vienna, I have seen newspapers kiosks in street corners that anyone can take, and if you wish to put the money in a box kept aside. Berlin Metro works in a similar fashion, so as Bremen tram lines; honesty is the driving force why such system works.

This certificate too based on honesty. Let your conscience and virtue prevail while using this certificate!

We just started a longitudinal experiment. Perhaps after every five years, we will see how many people who fake these certificates.
