How can I instill a Growth Mindset in my child during Distance Learning Sessions?

SET YOUR CHILD UP FOR SUCCESS

  • Set your child up in his/her quiet learning space (headphones help!)

  • Gather the necessary materials for the day's session

  • Use timers and other scheduling tools to assist with organization

  • Help support your child's teacher by making sure your child is present, attending, and away from distractions.

  • During natural breaks in the day, provide outdoor time and active play

  • Review Virtual Learning Expectations (click to learn more) with your child

LET GO AND LET GROW!

It's okay to be present while your child is learning, but it's very important for him/her to try and follow the teacher's instruction on his/her own during live sessions.

LEARNING IS HARD. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE!

I will be working hard to understand what your child can do independently. Supporting your child by pointing out errors is okay, but let them do the thinking to fix it. Students aren't supposed to necessarily have great success at the start when learning something new. Learning is a process, and it is okay to struggle at times. It is through this struggle that we often learn and process the best. And of course, use your good judgement and step in when things are really going sideways, and/or feel free to contact me when your child is particularly struggling to learn something even after great effort.

PRAISE THE PROCESS, NOT THE PRODUCT

After your child's learning session, give him/her feedback on his/her approach toward learning. You can say things like:

  • "You asked good questions."

  • "You did an awesome job of checking for errors after you were done."

  • "You really followed directions today!"

  • "I love how you waited our turn when you spoke today."

  • "You really stuck with that even thought it was hard. You are growing your brain!"

  • "I noticed that is was difficult for you to stick with the lesson."

  • "What can you try tomorrow to improve?"
