Taiwan-Latin America
and the Global context
Course Description
The course "Taiwan-Latin America Relations and the Global context" provides a comprehensive examination of the diplomatic, economic, technological, and security dimensions of the relationship between Taiwan and Latin American countries withing a global context. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will gain a deep understanding of the historical context, current dynamics, and future prospects of this important regional partnership. The course will delve into key topics such as foreign policy strategies, trade and economic cooperation, technology and innovation exchanges, security challenges, and geopolitical dynamics. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge and analytical tools to critically assess the complexities and implications of Taiwan's engagement with Latin America.
Course Objectives:
> Understand the historical evolution and context of Taiwan's relations with Latin American countries.
> Analyze the comparative dynamics of Taiwan's relations with China, the US, and Japan, and their impact on Taiwan-Latin America relations.
> Examine the diplomatic, cultural, and educational exchanges between Taiwan and Latin America.
> Explore trade relations, economic cooperation agreements, and investment frameworks between Taiwan and Latin American countries.
> Investigate cooperation in areas such as food, energy, water security, semiconductors, and critical minerals.
> Study Taiwan's role in the global technology supply chain and its contributions to technological innovation.
> Evaluate security challenges in the Taiwan Straits and the South China Sea, and analyze Taiwan's defense and security cooperation with Latin American countries.
> Assess regional security frameworks and multilateral organizations involving Taiwan and Latin America.
> Identify future prospects and challenges in Taiwan-Latin America relations, considering global trends and emerging opportunities.
