The conference venue is Amsterdam Business School, University of Amsterdam: Plantage Muidergracht 12
Schiphol Airport, just south of Amsterdam, serves many international and intercontinental destinations. From the airport, the easiest way to get to the city center is by train. Trains go regularly throughout the day. It's about a 15-minute ride to the city center (journey planner). You can buy tickets at the airport/train station. A single trip costs about €5.00-€6.00 depending on your final destination.
Amsterdam is also easily reached by train from multiple European destinations. There are regular and direct connections to and from Berlin and many other large German cities (ICE), Paris (Eurostar) and London (Eurostar), among other places.
The conference venue is located at Roeterseilandcampus (REC), one of the four city campuses of the University of Amsterdam.
REC is situated between two major train stations: Amsterdam Centraal (+/- 30-minute walk) and Amsterdam Amstel (+/- 35-minute walk). From these stations, REC can also be reached by metro lines 51, 53, 54. Get off at Weesperplein, from where it is about a 10-minute walk to the conference venue.
Amsterdam also has a dense tram and bus network. You can pay for your public transport tickets with your bankcard or mobile phone (OVpay), or you can buy day or multi-day travel tickets (excl. train) online or at metro stations. For more information, please consult this webpage.
Should you wish to explore Amsterdam North, a fun thing to do is to take the free ferry from behind Amsterdam Central to Buiksloterweg (right across the water) or to NDSM (a cultural and creative hotspot about a 15-minute ferry ride away).
There are plenty of hotels in the vicinity of the conference venue, which you can easily find via hotel booking websites such as booking.com. As a result of regulatory crackdowns, AirBnB's have become much rarer in Amsterdam over the past few years.
If you prefer avoiding the crowds, you may want to opt for a hotel outside of the "grachtengordel" (canal belt). The conference venue is located toward the east of the city center - this is a somewhat less touristy part of town.
We recommend Hotel CASA, a modern and fairly priced hotel right next to Amsterdam Amstel station.
Each of these places are less than a 5-minute walk away from the conference venue. All have plenty of vegetarian options on the menu, and most also serve a number of vegan options.
De Plantage - Our favorite place!
The Breakfast Club - All day brunch
De Deli - Deli-style lunch café
Cafe Koosje - Classic 'brown cafe' serving typical Dutch lunch fare
Box Sociaal - Another all day brunch place
Vatten Ramen - Good place for ramen
Cantina Caliente - Mexican fare
Do you have some time left for sightseeing but have you already visited Rijksmuseum/Dam Square/Van Goghmuseum/Anne Frank Huis? Here are some of our slightly more off-the-beaten-track suggestions:
ARTIS - Just around the corner from the conference venue, ARTIS is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands. You could try your luck and walk along the canal north of the zoo (Entrepotdok) - you might be able to spot some giraffes and elephants without having to buy an entry ticket.
Hortus Botanicus - Also very close to the conference venue, De Hortus is one of the world's oldest botanical gardens.
For foodies: De Kas is an upscale but laid-back restaurant with its own greenhouse and gardens ('kas' means greenhouse) in Park Frankendael, not too far from Amstel Station. Vegetables play a major role on the menu. Book well in advance.
Museum het Schip is a fantastic museum about the Amsterdamse School style architecture.
Nxt is a museum for art and technology that has large-scale immersive light installations.
Waterloopleinmarkt is the oldest flea market in Amsterdam (and the Netherlands).
