There are 3 topics that I teach: math, MAPEH, and English. I will briefly explain one of the teaching procedures of the three topics, which is the math topic of grade 2.
During my demo teaching in a Philippine elementary school, I used a structured teaching procedure to help students understand the topic, which was about multiplication. The process starts with preparatory activities such as greeting students in a friendly manner, introducing myself, taking attendance, and reviewing the previous lesson to ensure students understand the relevant basics. After that, I gave an introduction by showing a simple example using candy groups to introduce the concept of multiplication as repeated addition.
In the core stage, I explain the material in detail, using concrete examples such as arrays to help students understand that multiplication is the process of arranging objects in the same group. I explain important terms such as multiplicand, multiplier, and product as well as the symbols used in multiplication. Hands-on activities are given to students to practice their understanding, such as solving practice problems related to everyday situations, for example counting the number of toys in a row. At the end of the lesson, I reflect on the learning by asking questions about the definition of multiplication and its strategies, such as repeated addition and the use of arrays, to reinforce their understanding before assigning additional tasks as enrichment. This procedure ensures that the learning is interactive and meaningful for the students.
In time management and organizing activities during teaching sessions, I plan each step carefully to ensure that each activity is implemented efficiently and can achieve the set learning objectives. At the beginning of class, I start with preparatory activities such as greeting students, introducing myself, and leading prayers for about 5 minutes to create a warm and pleasant atmosphere. Then, I proceed with the attendance which takes about 3 minutes, during which each student is given the opportunity to answer with enthusiasm “I'm ready to learn, Miss.” This activity aims to build initial engagement and set the students' focus.
After that, I allocated about 10 minutes to review the previous lesson, giving students the opportunity to share their understanding of the topic that had been learned. In the new topic introduction section, I utilize about 15 minutes to explain the concept of multiplication by using visual and practical examples, such as candies and arrays, to help students understand easily. In the core activities, I allow about 10 minutes for students to do exercises individually or in groups, where they solve math problems based on real applications, such as arranging toys in rows.
Finally, I end the session with an evaluation and reflection activity, which takes about 10 minutes. Here, I ask questions to assess students' understanding of the multiplication concept and invite them to reflect on the strategies used. Finally, I give additional enrichment tasks, which are planned to be done at home or in preparation for the next lesson. All these activities are organized in detail so that each step is done in a timely manner and the learning objectives are achieved effectively.
In managing the classroom, I apply a structured yet flexible approach to ensure a conducive and enjoyable learning atmosphere for all students. At the start of the session, I begin by greeting students in a friendly manner and inviting them to pray together, creating a positive and focused atmosphere. By taking attendance directly and asking students to respond energetically, I ensure every student is engaged from the start and feels valued.
During the lesson, I keep the interaction with the students active and focused. I use open-ended questions to encourage participation and ensure that every student has the opportunity to speak. To keep all students engaged, I also utilize activity-based learning methods, such as the use of concrete examples that help them to better understand the material in a fun way.
If there are students who start to lose focus or talk to classmates, I gently remind them to return their attention by giving personal attention or redirecting the focus back to the material. I also provide opportunities for students to ask questions or share their opinions in turn, creating an inclusive and respectful classroom environment. By enforcing clear rules but with an understanding approach, I ensure that the classroom atmosphere remains controlled but enjoyable for students.
Finally, I also provide opportunities for students to reflect on their learning, either through short discussions or answering evaluation questions. This way, I can gauge their understanding while keeping the class organized and under control, ensuring every student feels heard and valued throughout the learning process.
