The elementary school at Panpacific University uses a curriculum that combines the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum of the Philippine Department of Education with global approaches and educational innovations. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in core skills such as literacy, numeracy, and development of moral values, while preparing students to be internationally competent individuals.
Primary education at this school lasts for six years, starting from grade 1 to grade 6, which is divided into two stages. In the early stage (grades 1-3), the focus is on building a foundation of literacy, numeracy and the introduction of simple concepts. Then, in the advanced stage (grades 4-6), students are introduced to more complex concepts with a project-based learning approach, encouraging them to think critically and creatively. In addition, students are taught global awareness by learning about international issues such as cultural diversity and climate change through the vision and mission statements that are mentioned every morning.
Teaching in this curriculum is thematic and experiential. Through thematic learning, students are encouraged to connect different subjects to understand the broader context. Technology is also an important part of learning, with the use of digital devices such as tablets and educational apps.
During my time in Urdaneta and Tayug, I had the valuable opportunity to teach three topics with three different classes. In Urdaneta, I taught Mathematics to Grade 2 students, as well as MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) to Grade 5 and 6 students. Meanwhile, in Tayug, I had the opportunity to teach English to Grade 1 students. This experience was not only challenging but also provided a deep insight into the learning needs at the primary level, where each class has unique characteristics that require different teaching approaches. Here is the lesson plan that I have created by discussing with the cooperating teacher and the class teacher.
