This is an early prototype of Gavagai , a first-person puzzle game in which the player must decipher the words of a foreign language to find objects and learn codes in order to progress. I was inspired by my experience of trying to play video games in their original Japanese (a language I speak, but not fluently), and trying to figure out the meanings of words from their context in the game without just looking everything up.
The language in this prototype is actually just romanized Japanese, but the final version would use simple made-up words.
This was one instance of me having to basically design from the ground up, feeling my way in the dark with only a vague idea of what I wanted the game to feature, but in the end, I finally had a clear idea of what it's meant to be.
