Practical information
Getting ready for your talk
If you plan on using a handout, please bring your own copies. The number of printed copies depends on the day you present: 40 (Thursday/Saturday), 45 (Friday), and 35 (Sunday).
There are HDMI and USB-C laptop connections at the podium. However, if you plan on using slides, we strongly recommend sending us your file in advance, and we'll upload it to the podium compter.
Please send us your slides no later than Tuesday May 14.
Poster presentations
Posterboard size: The surface of a posterboard is 8 ft (width) x 4 ft (height) or 96 in x 48 in (243.84 cm x 121.92 cm).
Poster size: The maximum poster size is 48 in x 36 in (121.92 cm x 91.44 cm). A smaller size is acceptable as long as your poster is easy to read.
Layout: You can choose between landscape and portrait page layout. If you opt for the vertical (portrait) layout, make sure your poster does not exceed the height of 48 in (121,92 cm).
When to install/remove: The posterboards will be available on Friday (May 17) between 11:00 and 16:15. You can install your poster either during the coffee break (11:00-11:15) or the lunch break (12:15-13:00). Material to attach the poster will be provided. Please remove your poster right after the poster session.
Where: The posterboards will be set up in room B225 (just on the opposite side from B227, where all the talks take place).
Useful resources: The blog Better Posters (by Zen Faulkes) and the video How to create a better research poster in less time (by Mike Morrison) have some tips for poster design.
Printing services
We recommend having your materials printed in advance. However, if prefer to print them in Halifax, here is the place where you can do it at the university:
Printing Services at Dalhousie University (Life Sciences Centre, Rm 224, 6287 Allumni Cres.) -- open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (Monday-Friday); email: printing.services@dal.ca; tel.: +1.902.494.6428. Please contact them in advance and make your order before coming (if possible). This especially applies to posters. Their official timeline for posters is 2-4 business days, but they can make it faster if you ask (depending on their workload). They could probably print your poster the same day, but it is not guaranteed.
There are also other printing services in the city:
Staples (2003 Gottingen St.) -- open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (Monday-Friday) and to 6:00 pm (Saturday)
TPH (1809 Barrington St.) -- open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm (Monday-Friday)
The same principle applies: contact the print shop of your choice in advance to avoid unexpected delays.
Where to eat
Complimentary breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks will be served on the conference site (there will only be a breakfast on Sunday). Catering will be provided in rooms B308 (on Thursday May 16 only) and B225 (on the subsequent days).
Otherwise, here is a list of places in the area that we can recommend (the first three are restaurants):
La Frasca (5650 Spring Garden Rd.) -- an Italian restaurant
Sushi Nami Royale (1458 Queen St.) -- a sushi place
Le Bistro By Liz (1333 South Park St.) -- a bistro-style restaurant
Pane and Circo (1515 Queen St.) -- a cafe serving panini, soups, espresso/capuccino, and desserts
Pete's Frootique (1515 Dresden Row) -- a food store close by
There are many other options on Spring Garden Rd. and neighbouring streets.
There are also many places to eat in the downtown area and closer to the waterfront.
Conference dinner
Restaurant: The Wooden Monkey (Halifax); 1707 Grafton St.
Date and time: Saturday May 18 at 19:30
Each guest will be paying for a meal of their choice.
Accommodations
The conference site is slightly off the main campus, but closer to the downtown area.
The closest hotels are:
Lord Nelson Hotel and Suites (1515 South Park St. Halifax, NS, B3J 2L2)
Cambridge Suites (1583 Brunswick St. Halifax, NS, B3J 3P5)
However, any hotel downtown or even closer to the waterfront would be just fine (it would still be a walking distance; however, you’ll have to walk uphill if going from the waterfront area).
For Airbnb, you can look around Queen St., Spring Garden St., Barrington St., Dalhousie University area (Coburg Rd., University Ave.), Saint Mary’s University (South Park St., Robie St. between Jubilee Rd. and South St.). Further distance would be something at the intersection of Quinpool Rd. and Robie St. (about 30-min walk).
Things to see in Halifax
Public Gardens (5665 Spring Garden Rd., just in front of the Lord Nelson Hotel)
Halifax Citadel (5425 Sackville St.)
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (1675 Lower Water St.)
Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 (1055 Marginal Rd.)
A note about the weather
Please ensure to be prepared for cooler nights and potentially (we hope) warmer days. Although spring is coming, weather in Halifax can still be chilly (and windy) in May. Bringing a sweater and a jacket is a good idea.
Other
There is no conference fee.
Prices in Canada do not include taxes (you have to add 15% to the price tag).
