Founded in 2009, we are a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and expanding Astronomical awareness in schools and among the public. Our vibrant membership includes postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate students from various universities, alongside enthusiastic recent school-leavers. Together, we form a dynamic, multi-generational network-driving outreach, nurturing curiosity, and transforming fleeting interest into lifelong engagement with the cosmos.
The Foundation of Astronomical Studies and Exploration was founded on the evening of the 9th of October, 2009, in the scenic setting of Ranabima Royal College, Kandy. It was the brainchild of Lasni Buddhibhashika, formed with the vision of creating a society dedicated to astronomy and the love of the cosmos—where all, from the passionate to the mildly curious, could engage themselves in this wonderful field of study. The goal was to build a platform for sharing knowledge and experience among enthusiasts.
It is a sad reality that many students give up their study of astronomy upon leaving school, allowing the knowledge and experience they gained during their formative years to fade away. Therefore, it was a timely need to retain all those interested in the subject and to welcome newcomers, ensuring the continued growth of knowledge, experience, and intellectual curiosity.
A strong desire arose among the members to invest in and share these aspects of astronomy, and also to lend a helping hand to school astronomical societies while working to involve many more schools in this pursuit. Let us call it an initiative to inspire intelligence.
All arrangements were made, and on that glorious evening, a new streak of illumination—a new path of knowledge-seeking—was formed. It was groundbreaking, as it was the first of its kind in the Central Province.
We especially take notice of and express our gratitude to the Master-in-Charge of RRCKAS (Ranabima Royal College Kandy Astronomical Society) and Tharaka for making this possible, for without them, the inaugural meeting would have been an impossibility. We also wish to thank the Principal of Kingswood College, Kandy, for all the support extended, and Ishan for his wonderful coordination of everything that mattered.
Please join us—all of you with a passion..
