A Labor of Love
Here is a table, set for a family.
Some are related by blood, others were invited in.
Some, regrettably, have been asked to leave.
Here is a meal, made tenderly
While crisscrossing our bodies
And reaching, asking, for more.
Here are the people, my people.
They have two things in common;
We ate together, and I chose each one.
Fast food parking lots.
Stools and counter tops.
A couch in the basement.
Self-serve trays in the loft.
Breakfast for dinner.
Tea and coffee on the porch.
Midnight snacks.
Playing house.
Here is the family, worthy and hungry.
And I feed them
Because they chose me.
