Thea Keene
multidisiplenary artist
I am a ceramicist, illustrator, artist, and storyteller. Born and raised in Missoula, Montana, I received my BFA in ceramics from Montana State University in 2022, and moved east to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, now calling the steel city home.
My body of work ranges across multiple mediums, ebbing and flowing with my interests. From ceramics to illustration to textiles and upcycled miniatures, my art is simply here to remind us that our existence is confusing and short. My work prompts finding moments of uncertainty, quiet, and gratitude within the world around us.
I am always crafting stories to tell. Drawing my inspiration from the people who co-inhabit the world with me, animals, high fantasy and science fiction, I am constantly world building. Illustration and comic writing is a meditative practice for me to visualize new worlds, while ceramics and sculpture lets me contemplate how humans could physically interact and connect with them.
Inspired by Bill Watterson, Hayao Miyazaki, Pendleton Ward, and Natasha Allegri, my approach to drawing is fluid and captures snapshots of movement. Most recently, my work is exploring what happens when the drawing leaves the page and interacts with a 3-dimensional object. The work of Sarah Pike, Ayumi Horie, and Grayson Perry inspire me to experiment with overlapping textures and patterns while creating ceramic pieces intended for everyday use.
The beating heart of my artwork is an emphasis on sustainability. I upcycle and reuse materials whenever possible - even my ceramic products are made of reclaimed clay. Beyond the environmental aspects, my work offers reflections on self-love and mental health, and always circles back to how our connections to our communities makes us stronger and more resilient.
