I am an assistant professor of Political Science at Soochow University, Taiwan. My research interests include authoritarian politics, party politics, political behavior in new democracies, and the US-China-Taiwan relations. My dissertation topic is “Ruling Party Institutionalization in Autocracies,” in which I conduct cross-national comparisons as well as case studies on former dictators’ ruling parties in two country-pairs, Taiwan and South Korea, and Indonesia and The Philippines. In summer 2020, I acquired a Ph.D. degree of political science from Michigan State University. My previous research appeared on Political Research Quarterly, Political Studies Review, International Interactions, Journal of East Asian Studies, Journal of Asian and African Studies, The Social Science Journal, and Asian Politics & Policy.

My major in the college was diplomacy (international relations) but I finally decided not to join the public service. I started to learn the social justice issues in 2011 when I was a graduate student in National Taiwan University.  I co-founded the social group “Youth Hoya,” which was concerned with poverty issues and the rights of young people in Taiwan, participating in several social movements. Later, I became a columnist in several media.  

Since 2014, I became the co-founder and co-editor of the website “Who Governs TW,” which aims to become a Mandarin version of the Monkey Cage, promoting public awareness and participation on politics. I am also in the editorial team of “US Taiwan Watch,” a 501(c)(3) NPO which reports issues related to US-Taiwan-China relations (we produce weekly podcast episodes). Previously, I lived in the Washington, D.C. area for almost six years and was a Visiting Research Fellow at George Washington University and the Global Taiwan Institute.  

我是陳方隅，目前在東吳大學政治系服務。我是在2020年七月從密西根州立大學取得政治學博士學位，博士論文主題是「威權政黨制度化」的比較，研究為什麼有些獨裁者建立起了綿密的基層黨組織，但有些獨裁者卻沒有將政黨制度化。我的研究興趣主要在威權政治、民主化、政治行為、以及美中台關係等主題，主要教學課程包括比較政治、研究方法、威權政治、民意調查。

我是從政大外交系畢業，但很早就決定了不想要走上外交人員的路，在台大政治所就讀期間，因緣際會接觸到許多的社會議題，參與「青年要好野」和「反貧困聯盟」的運作，開始關注像是貧富不均、社會正義等方面的問題。碩士論文做的是花蓮原住民部落農業合作社的研究。平常會在上報、思想坦克、關鍵評論網、鳴人堂、國語日報-中學生報，以及國外的國際關係政策類期刊媒體寫專欄評論文章。

2014年在太陽花運動之後，和幾位政治學的研究者朋友們一起創立了政治學科普網站「菜市場政治學」並擔任共同編輯至今，希望能效法華郵Monkey Cage這樣的專欄，轉譯政治學的知識、促成更多公共討論。我同時也加入了「美國台灣觀測站」的編輯群，主要關注美中台關係的發展（目前我們每週更新一次podcast：觀測站底加辣。歡迎大家追縱、收看收聽）。

先前我曾在美國華府地區住了將近六年，曾經在「全球台灣研究中心」智庫以及喬治華盛頓大學亞洲研究中心擔任訪問學者。2021年五月，我加入台灣科技部人文社會研究中心擔任博士後研究員。2021年八月份我開始在東吳大學政治系擔任助理教授。
