Desmond/Teacher Fambrini/Desi To My Dance Students
Currently I teach special education full time at a small homeschool program in the Bay Area (Marin County District). My students range from 2nd to 5thgraders. All faces and names from this point onward will either be blurred or replaced with fake names to protect privacy.
I reside in Novato California where my private practice is located but my school is located in Corte Madera which falls under the jurisdiction of the The Mill Valley School District under super intendent Dr. Kimberly Berman. However, since we are a private organization, we at times must appease district recommendations from other geographical locations and thus are referred to the broader Marin County Office of Education for general inquiries.
The superintendent and board members are elected in the Marin County District. Currently Mary J Burke is serving her 7thterm as the elected superintendent. Within the Marin District there are 18 districts and 147 precincts that serve over 40 thousand students. Currently 5000 teachers are employed within these 18 districts.
I am frequently involved in the process of determining to what level a district should be held accountable when a student is pushed forward throughout their primary schooling without truly meeting grade level standards. In my past year working in the private special education field, I have been involved in two lawsuits where undisclosed families have sued the district and I have either had to write academic summaries or been depositioned in regards to their current grade level standing and if there appeared to be proper intervention with the student in the public sphere prior to entering the private sphere where I reside. I think this is a difficult process because I do believe districts need to be held accountable for students with learning differences being properly diagnosed and not simply just pushed through their academic experience as if there was no problem to address. However, I also know the limited resources a district is given to provide for its students and worry about the repercussions the settlements have had on other students that may be going through the very issues a given student is suing for.

· All students have either IEPs or 504s and “learn differently.” I am not able to discuss or hint at any details, however, I can say all instruction is specialized and individualized for each student.

Despite a mixture of learning disabilities, I was able to succeed to a greater extent than some of my more talented counterparts because of access to educational intervention. Childhood access to resources and professionals allowed me to succeed in the field of academics. My aunt is a special educator and my godmother is an educational consultant. My aunt often practiced using different reading and phonics programs with me as a child which enhanced my learning experience. This also revealed inherent difficulties that lead to a neuropsych revealing ADHD, auditory processing disorder, and a tracking deficiency. Because of my family’s involvement in education, I had access to visual tracking optometrists, occupational therapists, and child psychiatrists that aloud me to learn how to manage my shortcomings and even turn some into strengths. Many I grew up with; however, did not have access to these interventions. Despite being just as talented, if not more so, then myself, they were not able to succeed in the classroom at the level I did.
It is this experience of holistic, effective educational access that shaped my future as well as my career choice. My own experiences translate into my work with children who benefit from similar intervention. Thus, to me, access is the ability to gain entry or establish contact to learning methods and intervention that an individual requires to succeed holistically in the field of education. My definition differs in the way that I do not believe education must be “appropriate” but customized and therefore idealfor the needs of those who make up the very system in question.
