This is the best way to get started at a reasonable price. I includes everything you need except for a groove cutter. However, it uses a European 220VAC charger so I had to buy a transformer to make it usable in the US.
There is plenty of wire to make a good-sized layout and enough paint to cover the road. I did not use the enclosed plaster but instead used pre-mixed spackling. There are also European-style road markings and barriers.

There are two Ni-MH button batteries used drive the motor. The on/off switch and charger connection are located underneath.
