One system that uses steering magnets, but is incompatible with the Faller system, due to differences in magnet strength and guide wire, is Tomytec Bus system: http://www.sumidacrossing.org/OtherElements/TomytecBusSystem/
The DC-Car (Digital Controlled Car) system uses a custom chip to control the motor and Infrared LEDs and detectors to control the distance between vehicles. IR is also used to communicate with the vehicles with LEDs embedded in the road. See this page for more details: http://dc-car.de/wiki_en/index.php?title=Main_Page. There is a US distributor for this system which is also a good source for electronic parts as well: http://www.miniaturemotorworksllc.com/
The Dynamo/MCC system is also uses a custom chip to control the motor and vehicle lighting but it uses a pair of wires embedded alongside the guide ribbon wire to send a receive commands via an RF link. This system is explained in detail here: https://mcc-modelcarparts.eu/index.php/welcome/page-three/.
