Grading

Grade Breakdown

I believe in a growth mindset which means that intelligence is not fixed. The more we all try and strive, the more we grow and learn. It is not always comfortable to try things we don't feel naturally good at, but I encourage you all to be brave and try. We can all learn and improve. This is true for reading and writing skills.

To develop your reading skills, you will read every Tuesday in class and use a particular reading strategy. You will awaken your minds to the reading topic by watching videos, having discussions, and sharing experiences in class and on Canvas. You will preview vocabulary. You will answer comprehension questions on Canvas. This is not the main part of your grade (15%), but it is essential for your building reading skills. If you do these activities, you should be able to complete the reading quizzes successfully. The reading quizzes are worth 35% of your grade.

To develop your writing skills, you will analyze writing models, practice using transitions and phrases common in essays, and go through the writing process: brainstorming, outlining, organizing, peer-review. This is a lot of work. It's not the most important part of your grade (15%), but this work will definitely help you succeed in writing first drafts and final drafts. First and final drafts of essays are worth 35% of your grade.
