Textbook
The course textbook is required for the course. Please make sure you have it before the first day of class. You can borrow the book for free from the VC Library. You are also welcome to purchase the textbook from the VC bookstore. If you order it online and it is not yet available, make sure you borrow it from the VC Library until it arrives so that you can participate from Day 1.

Course Description
This course is designed for multilingual speakers of English to develop college-level reading and writing skills. Emphasis is on essay development of expository writing in connection with advanced readings from various sources and a full-length text. The fundamentals of written English expression are reviewed with emphasis on standard American usage problematic to the multilingual student The course is designed to prepare students for ENGL V01A.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the following measurable skills and abilities:
1. Write expository essays which show good control of syntactic structures (e.g., common word order, patterns, coordination, and subordination)
2. Write essays that develop a thesis in a coherent and unified manner and that have clearly delineated introduction, body, and concluding paragraphs.
3. Understand the process approach to writing and utilize techniques such as prewriting, writing, revising, and editing.
4. Use writing as a means of discovering, learning, and understanding.
5. Display good control of morphology and the most frequently used syntactic structures (e.g. common word order and patterns, coordination, and subordination).
6. Use grammatical structures such as the noun clauses, reported speech, and syntax of complex sentences.
7. Read unmodified and non-simplified academic, technical, and literary works.
8. Read a full-length text written in English and explain in writing the theme and purpose of the author.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Write coherent, thesis-driven academic prose with well-developed paragraphs with support.
2. Integrate relevant ideas and evidence from credible sources using appropriate methods of citation.
Required Hardware
Computer/laptop or phone
Ideally, you should use a computer or laptop to work on your writing assignments. If you don't have a computer or laptop, you can borrow a Chromebook from the VC Library.
When doing assignments on Canvas, it is probably easier to do assignments as well as find teacher feedback when you use a computer or laptop. However, you can also use a phone to access Canvas.
Required Software
Canvas: You will use Canvas which is accessed through your myvcccd account.
Canvas Student App: I strongly recommend you download the free Canvas Student App before our course starts so you can stay more connected with our course. When prompted to find your school, enter Ventura College and then select our course from your Dashboard.
Word processing application: There are many options available to write your essays. Here are two free options you may use: Microsoft 365 and Google Docs.
