The Neuroscience of Learning:

increasing our impact with intentional, informed decisions

Mark Reardon Strategies for Great Teaching

This workshop expands and deepens the understandings gained from the Keynote, underscoring one undeniable and profoundly significant point: The brain, the organ of our mind, is dynamic and complex.

Neuro and cognitive science are helping us to understand how we can optimize the brain’s capacity to receive and process new information and learn at high levels. The findings gleaned from the research combined with proven educational best practices bring the “Why” behind the challenges of today’s traditional education settings and the solutions needed to close achievement gaps, increase results, and restore the joy and wonder of learning. We must get a firm hold on what learning is from the scientific perspective so that we better understand how our students learn best. By doing so, we equip ourselves with the neuroscience and strategies that impact the design and facilitation of learning and motivation.

During this day you will, among other things, …

* Examine why your current teaching practices are getting the results you desire (or why they are not)

* Grasp the top seven strategies that research has shown to have the greatest impact on achievement

* Discover five factors that impact new memory formation

* Uncover three minimizers of learning and what you can do to avoid them

* Explain the only true way to shift students’ mindsets and thereby shift their level of engagement

* Describe ways to build an optimal learning culture

* Apply what you’ve learned during the day to “What do I do when …?” scenarios

* Smile, be inspired, learn a lot, and have some fun doing it!

This workshop is built on effective practices for adult learning—interaction, collaboration, reflection, and immediate application to you and your course.
