Bed Making

Feb. 14. 2022

The other day I had the opportunity to learn how to properly make a bed. I learned the method that housekeepers use in hotels. We had to go through 3 layers of sheets: the cover, the comforter, and the blanket. Everything had to be precise and neat. Mr. Chong showed us a method for the blanket called, "miter," which is a straight or angled fold to neatly close the edges of the bed so it doesn't look sloppy.

I was surprised to see how many sheets it takes to make a bed. I was glad to know that I wasn't the only one who didn't know how to properly fix a bed. During this process I struggled a lot and it was just a small bed, I could only imagine what the housekeepers go through everyday, cleaning more than 5 rooms. Overall, it was such a fun experience for me. I didn't know you have to go through all these steps to make your bed look presentable.

Mrs. Carol Cruz's Presentation

Feb. 6. 2022

On Wednesday, Mrs. Cruz came to my class to talk about Guam’s Tourism Industry and the benefits of enrolling into GCC, specifically the Hospitality programs. Mrs. Cruz had a class after her presentation so we had limited time. I really enjoyed her presentation because I learned some new facts about Guam’s Tourism that I didn’t know about.

A few things I learned would be the reasons why the number of visitors decreased between the years 2001-2003. Guam was able to bounce back really quickly and we recorded record breaking visitor arrivals at 1 million in 2019. I also learned more about GCC and what it has to offer us students if we decide to go there for college. The biggest thing that stood out for me was that we can get our Associate’s Degree in just 2 years! To me that sounded really exciting because 2 years is a short amount of time to get a degree.

Dr. Betances and Dr. Baez's presentation

Nov. 04. 2021

Dr. B came into my class to talk to us about the importance of growing our vocabulary by reading. Turns out what they say is true, reading does make you smart. I should be the most important advocate for my success. I realized that I am the only one that can get myself to where I wanna be if I just put my all into it. He talked about the hardship of his early life and how one day day he decided to take control, with the help of his mentor. His story inspired me in a way. I learned that no matter where you come from or who you are, you can still be successful and that your past doesn't define you or your future. You just have to be willing to make that first step to get there.

A quote that stood out for me was when he said “Fall down 7 times, get up 8!”. It tells me that I shouldn’t give up so easily. Resiliency is key! I doubt myself a lot and sometimes I give up on things too quickly. This quote will motivate me to keep moving. I really enjoyed his presentation because I find it inspirational. I will apply what I learned by focusing on what's important for me. I will start by recognizing where I'm at, owning it, and going from there.

Ms. Oliveros Presentation

Oct. 21. 2021

Ms. Oliveros presents to us every single year about our college/career paths after high school. I learned about the different programs that could benefit us in the future when we go off to college, like CLYMER and DCAPS. I heard that DCAPS can help us earn 9 free college credits. She even talked about scholarships and FAFSA which is a great advantage to college because some students may struggle with money. I learned that the CLYMER program can help us skip the placement test and automatically be placed into college level Math and English. Of course, that's only if you have good grades in your high school English and Math classes.

Her presentation was very helpful and informative, even though I've heard it all before it was a nice refresher. When we told her that we didn't know what we wanted to do after high school, she said she had the same problem at our age and that it was ok. It was nice knowing that I wasn't the only one and that she wasn't pressuring us to figure everything out now. Also, I didn't realize how expensive it is to go to college, I'm glad we have these programs and assistance like FAFSA.
