Do you remember any fairy tales from your childhood? 

Remember that fairy tales were originally written for adult entertainment.  The earliest fairy tales were quite graphic and violent. 

Even when fairy tales were first being written for children, they still were often dark.  The overarching goal was to make an impact on the child hearing or reading the story and to teach a lesson.
