The Fairview High School Speech & Debate team supports equity and inclusion within the Speech & Debate community. We support the NSDA’s Debate Inclusion Statement and the NSDA Harassment and Discrimination Policy. If you have any concerns related to these aspects of the tournament, please contact the Tournament Directors and tab officials.
An adult must be available onsite for each team at all times.
Students are not allowed in rooms when judges are not present and between rounds should stay in the student center or cafe. Students found breaking this rule or in unscheduled rooms will be automatically disqualified.
Fairview is organized into the 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 hallways.
We will ONLY be in the 100, 200, 400, 600, and 800 hallways. Please DO NOT access the 300, 500 or 700 hallways.
The hallways are such that the 100 hallway at the bottom of the school and the 800 hallway is at the top.
Extemp Draw: Library
Contact the Judge's Table in the 800 hall for missing competitors or judges after 10 minutes or other issues.
We will do our best to run ahead of time so the judge's responsibility to keep the judges’ table informed as to when you may need to leave. Students are responsible for monitoring the schedule and getting to rounds.
We will aim to run early if possible. Students are responsible for getting to double entry rounds. Double entered students may not receive full prep time. Debaters should not be doubled in debate or within the same wave. Please allow other double entered students to present and then excuse themselves to the next round.

Day of Reminders for judging:
General:
NSDA event rules except in Poetry.
Please confirm you have the correct students in the round before beginning the round.
Extemp competitors will arrive to your room one at a time.
Timing:
In Debates: it is common place to ask students to time themselves. There is no official grace period in debate. Judges will determine how time will be kept in the round.
In Speaking and Interpretation Events: please do your best to provide time signals. Be consistent for all students.
All speeches receive a 30 second grace period.
Should a student go beyond the grace period, the student may not be ranked 1st. There is no other prescribed penalty for going over the grace period.
No minimum time is mandated.
Scripts:
Required in POI.
In extemp: Competitors may use the front and back of a 4 x 6" or smaller notecard while speaking.
If a notecard or script is used, there is no default ranking requirement.
Please submit ballots within 10 minutes of finishing judging the round. No oral critiques in the interest of time.
You may submit your ranks FIRST and then go back and add additional feedback.
Note taking and writing ballots while students are presenting is expected.
Completing Ballots:
Please make sure you provide students with constructive feedback. We recommend commenting on three things the student did well and three things the student can improve upon. Do not provide a low rank without an explanation.
For all debates, low point wins will be allowed.
Do not tie speaker points.
What do I do once I receive my ballot?
Please proceed to your assigned room at the designated time or as soon as you receive your ballot.
Students will be waiting outside the room and should not enter before the judge. If students enter the room prior to the judge, please inform the Judge’s Table after the round.
Extemp and Creative Storytelling competitors will enter the room one at a time at regular intervals.
Please start the round promptly even if not all students are present. Some are double entered and may be running late. At the end of the round, please wait five to ten minutes before marking a student as a “no-show.”
What should I do during the round?
Take role: before students begin speaking, please call role using the names on your ballot. If students are not present at the start of the round, please wait five to ten minutes at the end of the round before marking them as a “no-show.” EXCEPTION: Extemp and Creative Storytelling competitors will enter one at a time.
Prepare to time: Drama, Humor, Poetry, POI, and Duo presentations should be between 7 and 10 minutes. Extemp speeches have a maximum time of 7 minutes and Creative Storytelling and Impromptu speeches should be between 3 and 5 minutes.
Please give time signals, especially in Extemp, Creative Storytelling, and Impromptu. Additionally, please give a 30 second grace period for students to conclude their speeches.
Listen attentively and fill out ballots: please fill out your ballots while the students are speaking to keep the tournament running on time. We expect ballots to be turned in 10 minutes after the conclusion of the round.
Rank speakers: give each student a ranking of 1, 2 3, 4, 5, etc. with 1 as best in the round; 7th is the worst. Please also give students speaker points in order, i.e 1st gets the most points, last gets the least.
Please give the students constructive criticism on the ballot and give reasons for the ranking you have assigned them.
You may add comments to individual students and the room collectively.
Please inquire at the Judge’s Table or with tournament staff if you have any questions or concerns and thank you for judging!
Public Forum
In this event, students must persuade the judge of their position. Teams will flip a coin for sides (Pro and Con) and speaking order in the room. After this has been determined, the round will begin with the First Speaker, not necessarily the Pro side. Have the students sit matching your ballot.
Times for speeches can be found at the side of the ballot. Please give students time signals.
Please give students comments about their speaking styles and abilities and give a reason for your decision.
This event is waved unless otherwise noted, meaning that each round will consist to two separate debates between two different sets of teams. Please remain in your room until both debates have been conducted. Please make sure to have the teams debating each other match the codes on your ballot.
Lincoln-Douglas
LD is a philosophically based debate about values relating to the resolution. Students will be assigned either Aff or Neg. Each student should have a core value and criterion, presented in their first speech.
