Manx Radio's interview with Minister Chris Thomas provided some useful insight into how Government is approaching the proposed earned settlement changes and their potential implications for the Isle of Man.
We welcome the Minister's acknowledgement that many residents moved to the Island in good faith under the rules that existed at the time, as well as his comments regarding possible transitional provisions and future engagement with the UK once there is greater clarity on the final shape of the reforms.
These are important contributions to the discussion.
However, there is still no clarity on what any transitional protections might look like, who they would apply to, or whether they would provide meaningful protection for people already part-way through existing settlement routes.
For Fair Settlement Isle of Man, the central question remains:
Throughout this process, we have taken the view that the Isle of Man should be preparing its position now, so that it is ready to engage with the UK once the final details of the reforms are known. That remains an important priority for residents, employers and the wider community, and one on which we hope Government will provide clarity on as its thinking develops.
The Fair Settlement campaign will continue to focus on evidence, workforce stability and constructive engagement to ensure the voices of residents, employers and the wider community form part of the conversation.
