If suspect a student of misusing AI on an assignment it is important that you approach the situation thoughtfully.
Before you take action, identify what’s prompting your concern.
What makes me suspicious?
Am I relying solely on an AI detector score, or is there more?
Does the writing feel significantly different from the student’s usual work?
Are there sudden changes in tone, complexity, or formatting?
Do I have any earlier drafts, messages, or samples from this student for comparison?
AI detection tools are not reliable enough to serve as standalone evidence. If your concern begins and ends with a percentage score, you do not yet have a case.
Why?
Misuse of AI isn’t always intentional. Some students may misunderstand your expectations or believe tools like Grammarly, QuillBot, or ChatGPT are allowed unless explicitly told otherwise.
What to ask:
Can you walk me through how you completed this assignment?
Did you use any tools (AI or otherwise) to assist you?
What was your process for writing this?
Can you show me earlier drafts, notes, or outlines?
What Counts as Evidence?
No single piece of evidence will be definitive, try to collect as much proof as you can, such as:
Prior messages or work samples
Drafts or edit history
Personal observations
