AI is an undeniable part of our future, and education must fundamentally change as a result. As educators, we need to reconsider:
The types of skills we assess
The methods we use to assess
The ways we can prepare students for a world with AI
Included here are considerations and examples for how educators might use AI as part of their instructional design and classroom activities.
Teachers need to constantly ask themselves, could AI undermine my assignment’s integrity? If so, how can I redesign it?
Ideas:
Ask for personal reflection or classroom connections
Require process documentation or drafts
Shift from product to process-based grading
Show how you might use ChatGPT to brainstorm, revise, or fact-check
Explain ways in which using AI could be helpful, and ways in which it’s not
Encourage students to question AI responses
Compare AI-written intros vs. human ones
Generate practice problems or quiz questions (and revise them!)
Review AI-generated outlines for bias, gaps, or errors
Help non-native English speakers polish grammar, but require final edits by hand
Teach them to verify claims and cross-check facts
Ask them to reflect on how they used AI in a project
Discuss ethical concerns and digital responsibility
