Applying to Calvin: Influences on Learning and Achievement and Why he has These Patterns:
Interest is reciprocal which feeds interest of the topic, individual, and situational to learning goals and academic achievements. They compliment each other. - an interest in the subject helps deepen the level of learning compared to just surface learning. There is situational interest, which is based on the emotional state that takes place when a person is actively interested in the subject.
In Calvin’s situation, he is feeding off the attention he gets from Ms. Wormwood, regardless of it mostly being negative feedback. The personal attention he gets from interrupting class arguing the need for specific educational topics increases his desire to continue it. He is challenging Ms. Wormwood to go further with her explanation of why these subjects are important for him to learn. He is curious to know more reasons why before he’s okay with investing his energy to learn subjects.
In the comic strip where he runs to his locker to put on his super hero mask, this is his individual interest, and then rushes back to take the test incognito, this is the situational interest, which proves that he is interested in learning the topic and succeeding.
