Give Calvin reading and writing assignments related to his interests as much as possible.
Example: Allow Calvin to write a report about dinosaurs or snakes.
Incorporate his and other students' interests into your lessons.
Example: If Calvin enjoys superheroes, Miss Wormwood can talk about a historical figure as a superhero or supervillain.
Use hands-on learning activities.
Example: Create a short play about Lewis and Clark and give students the roles to act out.
When Calvin is in math class he is unengaged in the content, fantasizing about what he finds interesting, dinosaurs.
Mrs. Wormwood can motivate Calvin to learn by using his fantasy to engage him in the content.
For example: There are 6 dinosaurs drinking from a lake, a T-Rex comes and eats 3 of them. How many are left?
Calvin has related his science class to his everyday life, bringing in a snowflake.
The snowflake melts and Calvin uses that to get out of the rest of the class.
Mrs. Wormwood should validate this understanding to make Calvin feel competent in his class.
By encouraging further discussions and challenging his knowledge you can engage Calvin to think further into the subject.
