Students will write a 3-5-page, MLA-formatted rhetorical analysis essay. You can choose a song, a film, a written text, or an advertisement, and they will analyze how well the author of their chosen text effectively convinced the intended audience of their argument. To do so, students will identify the author's argument and purpose of this text and analyze the rhetorical strategies and appeals that the author used in order to determine whether the author was successful in convincing their audience and fulfilling their purpose.
Specific assignment instructions for this essay will be provided on Canvas. This paper must be submitted online via Turnitin on Canvas BY 11:59PM on the day the essay is due.
The Rhetorical Analysis Essay will be scored using a rubric that will be provided in Canvas.
The Social Issue Unit will involve you choosing an issue that you care deeply about and constructing a few projects: Argumentative Research (which includes the Environmental Scan, Root Cause & History, and Argument), and Social Issue Presentation. The details for the assignments can be found below with the most thorough prompts available in Canvas.
A traditional, 10-12-page argumentative research paper on your specific issue, utilizing your homework and discussions from the environmental scan, history and root cause, and argument sections. Students will submit sections of their outline through the semester for feedback: the Environmental Scan portion (week 2), the Root Cause & History portion (week 3), and the Argument portion (week 5).
At the conclusion of part 1 of our course (the Social Issue Unit), students will construct a presentation summarizing their social issue projects using Google Slides, Google Sites, PowerPoint, Adobe Spark, Prezi, or Microsoft Sway. This is a way for everyone to see what you’ve been working on! Specific instructions will be provided in the prompts packet at the beginning of the semester and will also be on Canvas.
Record your presentation slides or website as though you were presenting it in a face-to-face class. You can use Zoom or a similar program to share your screen and narrate your presentation with audio, creating a 10-15-minute webinar-style presentation. Details will be given with the Social Issue Presentation prompt.
The Social Issue Unit Projects will be scored using rubrics that will be provided in Canvas.
Homework activities will include things like discussion boards, outlines, peer reviews, quizzes, and other activities.
