"Am I mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared for the entrepreneurial journey of becoming a full time video game streamer, developing a network and/or community of individuals and intentionally putting myself and life publicly out on the internet for the world to see?"
This is an absolute legitimate question and a place I believe everyone needs to start. So much has happened in the past year and a half that many have turned to video game streaming as a source of income or a place of relaxation to get away from the realities of life...etc. Many have turned to streaming without being prepared for what it truly takes to become successful. Whatever your motivation or intentions are with your streaming endeavor, the first step is realizing the following:
You are starting a form of business. Whether it be building a community of people around a specific niche' or just solely entertainment, do not forget the fact that it is a business and that it should be treated as such. Part-time and half hearted efforts will be your streams demise.
Your video game stream will be physically and mentally demanding. Nothing grows from just hopes and dreams, it's quite the contrary. As a business owner of your streaming channel you'll have to put in the early mornings and late nights in order to fashionably build your stream into an empire. Now you probably have no intention of becoming the world's biggest streamer, but none the less your streams growth is directly proportional to the effort you put into it, and many times this will be associated with emotional highs and lows. These are all things that you need to prepare yourself for beforehand. A great illustration is the farmer with the saying "you reap what you sow", so SOW some good seed into your stream early on.
Any form of business, to include your streaming channel, requires an initial investment. Most of the software you'll utilize are free but considering the audio and visual equipment and gaming consoles or PCs, you'll begin to find that it can become expensive fairly quick. BUT....it doesn't have to be right away. There are so many factors and components to consider that go into streaming. Not every component of streaming is necessary for you. Take into consideration what you want your stream to be and build around that idea so that you can have a better sense in what it will cost you to get started. It is going to take time. Get it out of your head that you are going to have overnight success. This mentality is probably the number one dream killer in any startup stream. You end up buying all the bells and whistles, put up all the sweet RGB lighting in your back drop, hit that "GO LIVE" button and for the first month you average 1-3 viewers and all of a sudden you're in distressed because you think that your channel is the gift to the Earth and that no one is realizing this but you. Now everything seems to be slowly falling apart, when realistically YOU JUST STARTED?!?. STOP IT! Be patient, trust the process, and enjoy the journey and your time streaming.
Drill these four points into your mind and I promise that the road becomes a lot smoother. By no means am I suggesting that you set the bar low. What I am telling you is that video game streaming is more of a marathon than it is a sprint. It is going to take time and due diligence, on your part, to ensure that your video game streaming journey is successful.
