My backgrounds in citizen science and children's science education strengthen my understanding of community ecology, and drive me to learn more every day.
Independent Researcher (July '21 - May '22)
Mentor: Dr. Nicholas C. Brandley
The College of Wooster - Wooster, OH
Project: Studying rapid shifts in visible Carolina grasshopper (Dissosteira carolina) coloration during flights
Located hundreds of Carolina grasshoppers in the wild and filmed their flights using a high-speed camera
Used R and ImageJ to measure the colors displayed in each frame of each takeoff/landing, then used Excel to analyze trends in the visual data
Synthesized previous researchers’ findings on similar visual anti-predator displays, then drafted and repeatedly workshopped our paper
Middle-school science educator (Aug '22 - Nov '23)
Employer: Teaching Responsible Earth Education
Role: Using interactive skits & activities to teach basic ecology & biochemistry concepts to children aged 11-13
Taught from scripts, but frequently had to improvise and adapt to time constraints (both surpluses and shortages) and group energy
Tended to students' needs while keeping the activity going
Learned to cooperate with my environment to make critical points
Created educational materials
Field identifier with iNaturalist (Aug '20 - ongoing)
Personal project: Identifying wild organisms, from natural areas to sidewalk cracks
4.1k+ observations across 1.2k+ taxa
B.A. in Biology
The College of Wooster (Aug '18 - May '22)
PhD student
Louisiana State University (January '24 - ongoing)
