PRK Raleigh

For Raleigh patients who want to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses, PRK can be an excellent vision correction option. It is especially useful for people who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK because of their corneal shape, thickness, or lifestyle.

PRK works differently from LASIK. Rather than creating a corneal flap, the surgeon removes the thin surface layer of cells before using a laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. The surface layer then grows back naturally during the healing process.

ABOUT US

This approach can make PRK suitable for patients with certain corneal characteristics that may make LASIK less appropriate. However, being a candidate depends on more than your glasses prescription. Your corneal measurements, eye health, prescription stability, lifestyle, and healing history all play important roles.

PRK candidates are generally adults with a stable prescription and healthy eyes. The specific prescription limits can vary depending on the surgeon, technology, and individual eye characteristics.

PRK Surgery Raleigh

People with relatively thin corneas may benefit from PRK because the procedure does not involve creating a LASIK flap. Some patients with corneal characteristics that make flap creation less desirable may also be considered for PRK.

Overall eye health is another important part of the evaluation. Conditions such as active eye infections, poorly controlled diabetes, and certain autoimmune disorders may prevent someone from having PRK until the condition is properly addressed.

Your previous healing history may also be discussed during the consultation. Since PRK requires the outer corneal layer to regenerate, your surgeon needs to consider how your eyes are likely to respond during recovery.

Your lifestyle can also influence the recommendation. People who participate in contact sports or work in environments where their eyes could experience physical trauma may appreciate the fact that PRK does not leave behind a corneal flap.

PRK and LASIK both use laser technology to reshape the cornea, but the procedures approach the corneal surface differently. For some patients, that difference makes PRK the more appropriate choice.

One important consideration is corneal thickness. If measurements suggest that creating a LASIK flap would leave an insufficient amount of corneal tissue, PRK may provide another path to laser vision correction.

PRK can also be attractive to people who face a higher possibility of eye trauma. Since there is no flap, there is no LASIK flap that could potentially become displaced after an injury.

This can be particularly relevant for athletes involved in contact sports and individuals working in physically demanding professions. Even someone who participates in activities such as cycling, basketball, or other recreational sports may prefer PRK because of the absence of a flap.

The choice should ultimately be based on your individual anatomy and circumstances. Being eligible for LASIK does not automatically mean LASIK is the best procedure for you.

Not everyone is a candidate for PRK. Certain eye conditions and health circumstances can make the procedure unsafe or require treatment before surgery can be considered.
