Cataract Surgery Raleigh

Raleigh's most trusted refractive surgeons offering LASIK, LALEX (SMILE), PRK, EVO-ICL, Custom Lens Replacement (CLR/RLE), and cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery

We are all born with a natural lens inside our eyes. At birth, the natural lens of the eye is very clear. As time passes, this lens becomes cloudy, and when it begins to interfere with vision, it is called a cataract. Cataracts are treated by a surgical operation that removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens implant (intraocular lens or IOL). Basic (monofocal) IOLs that are placed in the eye at the time of cataract surgery are only designed for vision at a fixed distance. Generally with these lenses, patients must use reading glasses or bifocals in order to see at close range. Extended range IOLs can give a full range of vision from up close to far away without glasses. Thanks to the latest technology, Cataract Surgery gives patients several options from which to choose.

LENSX LASER CATARACT SURGERY

Porter Ophthalmology was one of the first practices in Raleigh to offer LenSx Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon employs a LenSx® femtosecond laser that utilizes a focused beam of light to make precise incisions and soften the cataract during the patient’s cataract treatment. This proven, computer-guidance system directs the laser over the eye and provides the most precise and accurate results for each individual patient.

Toric Lens Implant / IOL

Toric IOLs are a great option for patients with astigmatism, as well as cataracts, because toric lens implants correct both problems. Astigmatism is an uneven curvature of the eye that is usually corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Basic intraocular lens implants (IOLs) can correct for nearsightedness or farsightedness but not for astigmatism. A toric IOL, however, has additional power in a specific direction that corrects astigmatism. Patients who choose to have their astigmatism corrected can see more clearly without glasses after cataract surgery.

Extended Range Lens Implant/IOL

Multifocal and Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses are designed to deliver clear vision at a range of distances, including far, intermediate, and near. These IOLs are a great option for patients who want the most independence from glasses or contacts following surgery. Because the eye needs to be very healthy aside from having a cataract, extended range IOLs may not be an option for some individuals. They also require a period of adjustment for the patient as they adapt to their new vision after surgery.

FAQ’S About Cataract Surgery Raleigh

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

Signs and symptoms of cataracts, a common disease of the eye, include blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to light, seeing halos around lights, and faded colors. If you notice these changes, it’s important to consult an eye specialist.

How do cataracts affect vision after age 40?

Cataracts often develop slowly and may start affecting visual perception and visual acuity after age 50. They can make reading, driving, and recognizing faces challenging. Consulting a physician or an eye doctor regularly can help monitor these changes. Once your eye doctor diagnosis you with a cataract they will assist you with a referral to Porter Ophthalmology for cataract surgery.

When is the right time to have cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is typically recommended when cataracts significantly impair vision and affect daily activities. Certain conditions, like diabetes, can accelerate cataract formation, making it important to consult an eye doctor for timely advice. At Porter Ophthalmology, our eye surgeons can evaluate your condition and advise on the best time for surgery to restore clear vision.

What is the recovery time for cataract surgery?

Recovery from eye surgery is usually quick, with most patients experiencing improved vision and reduced glare within a few days. Full recovery may take up to a few weeks. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Porter Ophthalmology offers advanced cataract surgery options to optimize your recovery time.

Are there any risks associated with cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is generally safe, but like any surgery, it carries some risks, such as infection, inflammation, swelling, or vision loss. The experienced surgeons at Porter Ophthalmology use advanced techniques to minimize risks and ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

Can cataracts return after surgery?

Cataracts do not return after surgery. However, some patients may develop a condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO), which can cloud vision again. Porter Ophthalmology offers a quick laser treatment called YAG laser capsulotomy to resolve this issue if it occurs.

What types of lenses are used in cataract surgery?

Various intraocular lenses (IOLs) are available, including monofocal, multifocal, EDOF, and toric lenses. These corrective lenses are implanted in place of the removed natural lens during cataract surgery. The specialists at Porter Ophthalmology will discuss the best IOL options based on your lifestyle and vision needs to ensure optimal results.

How do I prepare for cataract surgery?

Preparing for cataract surgery involves a pre-operative eye exam, medication review, and detailed conversation about your vision goals. Porter Ophthalmology provides thorough pre-surgery instructions and guidance to help you prepare effectively for the procedure.

What should I expect during cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 15-20 minutes per eye. It’s a comfortable procedure under local anesthesia. At Porter Ophthalmology, the team ensures you are comfortable and well-informed throughout the surgery process.

How will my vision improve after cataract surgery?

Most patients experience significant improvement in vision clarity and color perception after cataract surgery. Porter Ophthalmology’s expertise and advanced technology help achieve excellent visual outcomes, allowing patients to resume their normal activities with enhanced vision.
