Tips from a local: Most popular neighborhoods amoung students
The Dom Bosco neighborhood is popular among students due to its proximity to the Dom Bosco Campus (CDB). Additionally, the neighborhoods of Matozinhos, Fábricas, and Bela Vista, as well as the areas around Avenida Leite de Castro are also near CDB. For those who don't mind walking a few extra minutes or taking the bus, the city center is not far away and is a good option.
The Santo Antonio Campus (CSA) is located in the city center, in front of the São Francisco Church. Because of this, the city center (Centro), Bonfim, and the eastern side of Tejuco are good options for students.
The CTAN Campus is further away from the other campuses and located close to the highway, so there are not many housing options nearby. The road Avenida Leite de Castro and the Fábricas neighborhood are the closest, but they are still a 20 to 30-minute walk to CTAN, so it is preferable to choose housing with bus stops nearby!

There are several housing options for newly enrolled students: living alone in an apartment or a kitnet (studio); sharing an apartment; or living in a student house, such as a Pensão or a República (which may be all-female, all-male, or mixed).
Pensão and Repúblicas are common among students. Below we have a table with differences and similarities between them. The information presented do not represents all the housing options, and vary from place to place.

Traditional Repúblicas
Generally either female or male, with specific treatment towards the freshmen.
Freshmen could be subjected to trotes, ( a form of hazing ) by veterans (students who have been there for more time) to welcome and integrate students.
Nontraditional Repúblicas
It can be either female-only, male-only, or mixed. Most do not have rituals or types of hazing.
There is no hierarchy, but there is still interaction and hangouts, like in traditional repúblicas.
Entering a traditional Greek life house is often accompanied by welcome rituals (trotes). They may vary from house to house, but some elements are quite common among them. They are part of university culture.

What is a trote?
Trotes consists of activities organized by veteran members to welcome freshmen. These activities can vary from simple pranks, such as throwing eggs and flour, to more elaborate ones, like unusual haircuts.
It is important to remember that hazings should always be respectful!

The 'Freshman Plaque'
One of the most common trotes are the personalized 'plaque', usually made of wood, something freshmen are required to carry around campus and the city at all times. If a freshman breaks the rules, they may receive a new plaque: the 'shame plaque''. While this practice is very common in traditional repúblicas, not all of them follow it, and the rules may vary.

Parties
Parties play a key role in socialization; Many traditional houses organize open or closed events for socializing among members, freshmen, alumni, and guests. These parties help build connections, maintain the house's identity alive, and serve as fundraisers for the house.
Students from different repúblicas also get together and socialize. These events are known as "Intercâmbios", informal meetups between student houses.
The average price per person in 2025 is about R$525.30. However, this amount can vary significantly! Prices range from R$350 to R$800 or more. That variation depends on:
Location;
the facilities available;
services included (such as internet, water, electricity, and cleaning);
and the number of residents
These data were gathered from popular Facebook groups listed in the links above on this site.
Are you someone who prefers a more independent lifestyle and having your own space and quietness?
