As a patient, friendly and trustworthy tutor with over 14 years of full-time tutoring under my belt, I am hugely experienced. I love to see my students going from strength to strength, growing in confidence and reaching their goals, whether they work with me for a few months, or for years. I build caring and nuturing relationships with my tutees and, by extension, their families too - I've been very lucky and privileged over the years to work long-term with families, supporting children from Key Stage 2 and/or the 11+ all the way through to GCSE.
Lessons take place online, usually for 1 hour once a week (with an option for additional lessons during the holidays). One to one lessons allow each session to be structured and tailored specifically to your child's needs and goals.
You will find a summary of the tutoring I offer below, but I do find the best way forward is to chat!
So do contact me directly if you would like to find out any more about my tutoring approach.
As a specialist 11+ tutor, I currently have a 100% success rate for children gaining an offer for at least one of the private schools for which they have applied. I offer English and Maths tuition covering all aspects of the KS2 curriculum for both of these subjects. Children come to me for a range of reasons: general confidence building, to stretch and challenge them beyond what they receive at school or to give specific teaching and guidance in problem areas.
Years 7 to 9 are such exciting years for English tuition where students are free to develop learning, interests, passion and creativity without the pressure of looming exams. Although we will begin to nurture the skills that will eventually be required at GCSE, we do so in a relaxed and confidence boosting way. Tuition can be used to support specific learning alongside school work and/or to explore specific areas of interest such as: persuasive and transactional writing, creative writing and comprehension.
The GCSE and iGCSE English exams are a key area of interest for me and many of my 11+ tutees return for lessons in Years 10 and 11 for additional support, joining those I've worked with through secondary school and new students as well. I also specialise in working with older students who have previously failed their English Language exams. Tuition can be incredibly useful for all abilities and levels, from those aiming to secure a pass to those targeting the highest grades.
I am very au fait with the various exam boards including: AQA, Edexcel, WJEC, iGCSE Edexcel and iGCSE CIE.
Literature texts covered currently include:
Poetry: Power and Conflict (AQA), Love and Relationships (AQA), Chingonyi (CIE), Songs of Ourselves (CIE), Conflict (Edexcel), Time and Place (Edexcel), the WJEC anthology, iGCSE Edexcel Literature and Language anthologies.
Shakespeare: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello.
Modern Prose or Drama: An Inspector Calls, Blood Brothers, A Streetcar Named Desire, A View From the Bridge, The Crucible, Lord of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men.
19th Century Novels: A Christmas Carol, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Sign of Four.
