Education and AI: Natural Language Understanding and Tutoring Systems
ChatGPT : ChatGPT is the most advanced AI language generator and chatbot ever made widely available to the public. How might it be used in education? Tech & Learning magazine offers a perspective on this App that is creating buzz across the education sector!
OpenAI created ChatGPT. It is a model that interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.
Grammarly is a writing app that suggests words, punctuation, grammar, spelling and usage, wordiness, style, punctuation, and even plagiarism
Did you ever wonder how Grammarly "knows" how to prompt suggestions? It uses machine learning.
IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding analyzes text using a machine learning model and identifies emotions, topics, and relationships within the text.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) use information (data) captured while students are completing an online activity. Immediate feedback is provided, the program adjusts to student responses, and presents a new activity based on the feedback.
AI Models are applied to ITS. AI models are simple computer representations of what happens in the real world. Think of how a model car is a simplified version of its real counterpart.
The suggested activity that is presented can be based on:
domain model (the knowledge about the subject the students needs to learn)
pedagogy model (effective teaching methods based on learning science research)
learner model (what is best suited for the student based on their previous activity and other learners' experiences)
The market for AI products in education is estimated to be worth $6 billion by 2024 (Holmes et al., 2019). There are generally two categories of AI in education products: One designed to support students directly (student-facing tools) and those designed to support teachers to help students (teacher-facing tools). Links for Pearson, Assistments, and IXL are sample tools.
Dialogue-Based Tutoring Systems:
Operation Aries! A computerized educational game for college and high school students with virtual teacher and student. Tutorial conversations between player, teacher, and students form the backbone of this game, an Auto Tutor project. Intelligent tutoring and video game attributes are involved.
