Science progresses by asking questions and attempting to answer them. The deepest questions require the most profound answers and have the greatest potential to improve our understanding of the universe. Perhaps the deepest question of all science is the question of existence: why is there something rather than nothing?

A correct understanding of existence at the most basic level would provide a powerful and reliable foundation for rigorous new theories of physics. If we can manage to correctly answer the question of existence, it could potentially grow to teach us everything about nature.

There are books which describe how the laws of physics emerge from deeper laws, but they don’t even attempt to describe the origin of existence itself. There are philosophical books that speculate about the origin of existence, but they admit that no one has been able to find a satisfactory answer.

Attempts to explain existence have always included assumptions of preexisting entities or mechanisms which subsequently created the universe. These answers are incomplete, begging the question of why those universe-creating mechanisms existed in the first place.
