BUTLER, Pa. (July 12, 2023) – Pennsylvania American Water, Butler Township, and the City of Butler will join the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to hear public comment on Pennsylvania American Water’s recent application to acquire the wastewater system assets of the Butler Area Sewer Authority (BASA).
The system serves nearly 15,000 customers over 32.5 square miles, including the City of Butler; Butler and Center townships; East Butler Borough; and parts of Connoquenessing Borough, Summit and Oakland townships, and a small portion of Penn Township. Pennsylvania American Water is already the drinking water service provider to approximately 19,500 customers in the region, and its predecessor companies have served the Butler area since the late 1800s.
According to local officials, Pennsylvania American Water is equipped to make the $75 million in improvements that the BASA’s facility requires, and residents should remain confident and know that they will receive the highest quality wastewater services from Pennsylvania American Water.
Additional details about the proposed acquisition and potential future rate impact were included in a notice mailed to all Pennsylvania American Water customers and all current BASA customers in April and May 2023.
The public input hearings are scheduled for Tuesday, July 18, 2023, and Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 6 p.m.
