Module 3: Ordering, receiving, storing and disposal of medicines 

This module will look at : -

• How to prepare to administer medication

• Adverse effects, adverse reactions and allergy status

• Safe handling of hazardous medicine

• Top tips for ordering and disposal of medicine

Terms used in the module:

• A 'patient’ or 'service user' is the individual person receiving support with their medicines. These terms are interchangeable within the modules. This will be the same for all modules (1-4).

• 'Carer, care staff, formal carers’ are people employed to provide care and support to people, this includes registered nurses and non-clinical carers.

• An ‘informal carer' is used to define an unpaid carer such as a family member or friend.

• ‘Care Providers’ are the organisations that directly provide health or social care services (such as a Care homes, Supported living, Shared Lives and Domiciliary services).

• ‘Non-nursing Home’ covers a care home that does not provide nursing care (for example, a residential care home).

• 'Nursing Home' covers a care home that provides nursing care (for example, a nursing care home).

• ‘Care Home' covers both non-nursing homes and nursing homes.

• 'Domiciliary Care' is provided to people who live in their own homes but require additional care and support from care staff.

• A ‘PIL’ is a patient information leaflet, it provides information on using the medicine safely.
