Program Timing

• What days and hours does the program run?

  • The tutoring program will typically run Monday through Thursday from 3:00pm - 7:00pm. Fridays will be used for tutor training with I Would Rather Be Reading, meaning tutors will not be at sites on this day. 

• How will we know when tutors should work with each student?

  • Tutors will work with groups of students each day for 20-30 minutes each. Groups will each have 3 students. I Would Rather Be Reading will support tutors in deciding how to group students to best fit their needs academically. You, as leaders of the organizations, do not have to worry about this piece as it will be the responsibility of the college students. 

• If our site is not open M-Th from 3:00-7:00, can we still participate in the program?

  • This will depend on your organization's particular situation. We will review and advise on a case by case basis. It is best though if your site can run for the full length of the program. 

Staffing

• Our Learning Hub already has college students that work with our students. Can they participate in the program as tutors?

  • If you currently have a college student working at your organization, we will do our best to place your students at your site. Be sure to let us know the name of this student. If you have a student who works at your organization, but has not applied, please share the information with them!

• Can there be more than 1 tutor sent to a site if there are more kids?

  • We are working to staff sites at no more than a 30:1, student to tutor ratio

• How many students will tutors work with?

  • Tutors will work with 3 students at a time in small groups. They will pull 4-5 groups per day for 20-30 minute sessions. 

  • We are constantly assessing numbers to understand what ratios are available.  Our goal is to provide student to tutor ratios of no more than 30:1.

  • Will our current staff have to do tutoring for students?

  • No, the tutoring will come directly from the college students we hire. This is because they will receive regular training from I Would Rather Be Reading about how to support students in a tutoring environment through the implementation of their Trauma Informed Reading Mentor (TIRM) program.

Curriculum

• What will tutors be teaching during the small group sessions?

  • In this tutoring program, tutors will be utilizing the strategies taught by I Would Rather Be Reading in their Trauma Informed Reading Mentor curriculum. 

• How will tutors learn tutoring strategies?

  • I Would Rather Be Reading will provide an initial training prior to any tutoring sessions that will give tutors a baseline of knowledge. Then, each week I Would Rather Be Reading will host additional trainings that will build each tutor's tutoring knowledge repertoire. 

Miscellaneous

• I reviewed the presentation and wanted to inquire about the college students. Do they choose which Learning Hubs they attend or could we request their services?

  • Typically, we will assign tutors to sites at random. However, if a tutor is already connected with an organization or if they have transportation concerns, we will do our best to place them at their preferred location. If your organization currently works with a college student who would like to tutor in this program, please contact Natalie Wynn-Abell so that we can ensure they remain at your site.

Student Registration

• How will students register for the program? 

  • Families must register using the digital Jefferson County Public Schools OST Consent Form naming your organization as their addended site. 

Transportation

• Will transportation be provided for students?

  • During this program, transportation will not be provided. 

How do we apply to be a Community Tutoring site?

1. Complete the Learning Hub Site Application Form.

2. Complete all required JCPS documentation. 

3. Access and download student flyer and consent form here!

All students must complete and submit this form digitally, which is submitted to JCPS. JCPS will share the information with Evolve502. This is how we will build your roster and create the attendance form.

3. Have all employees/volunteers at your Learning Hub complete the Background Check form. 

4. Evolve502 will schedule a meeting with your organization to review safety, quality, and capacity information and to discuss the requirements listed in the Services Agreement.

5. Read and sign the Learning Hub Services Agreement, submit all documentation using this link: Document Submission Form
